Quiz submissions and Turnitin

I'd like to time the students' on their essay writing (Quiz feature) as well as check for for plagiarism (Turnitin), but both options are not available on CANVAS. Why can't I use Turnitin for a file upload under the "Quiz" feature?

@Chris_Hofer is correct that quizzes does not integrate with TII, but you can use a file upload feature of Quizzes and then submit the files through TII's web portal. I hope that helps, @fwoodford !

As far as I know, the Turnitin integration with Canvas is only available for assignments…not quizzes.  Even though there is a file submission quiz type, that does not mean that Turnitin would be automatically available.  In fact, no part of quizzes can be used in conjunction with Turnitin … as far as I am aware.  @dhulsey might have some other ideas for you, though.  Dallas is my “go to” since he has lots more experience with Turnitin than I do.

Thank you @dhulsey ! I thought of this solution, but I couldn't figure out how to submit the files through TII's web portal. How do I find directions for how to do this?

I have 120 students in one semester with 14 quizzes for each. That's 1680 manual submissions. Isn't there a better way?

Maybe, @burkay_ozturk . Perusall (a social annotation app) integrates with Canvas and has quizzes. Perusall has a beta test going now  for integrating Turnitin as detailed here: https://support.perusall.com/hc/en-us/articles/16417685288727-How-do-I-enable-TurnItIn-

I do not use quizzes in Perusall, so I do not know if the quizzes are scanned through Turnitin, but I am about to ask their support about it now.

@burkay_ozturk , Perusall support says that essay questions are run through Turnitin, so you could use the Perusall LTI integration to offer quizzes, and, if you set up the Turnitin integration, the responses would be scanned by Turnitin. Perusall is free, so the only cost would be your time and some testing to make sure it works as desired. 

The other alternative is a testing browser like Respondus, which locks students into the browser so that they cannot copy and paste, print, or open new tabs or apps until the quiz has been submitted.

Thank you for these suggestions. My institution does not allow Perusall integration at the moment but I will ask our admins.

The first option is to use a file upload question in the quiz. This allows students to upload a file in response to the question, and the instructor can bulk download the files from the quiz as documented in How do I create a File Upload quiz question?.  Once the students' files are downloaded in a zip file, the instructor could upload the zip file to Quick Submit on Turnitin's website. This is one good reason for instructors to set up accounts through Turnitin's interface and enable the quick submit in their Turnitin account settings.

The second option is to use essay questions in the quiz. After the students complete the quiz, the instructor can generate an item analysis. Download the item analysis and open it. Next, locate the column with the essay responses you wish to scan, and it helps here if you can search for a key word to locate the column. I always include the word "essay" in my essay questions, which lets me locate the columns I need quickly. Next, copy the column and submit it to Turnitin via cut and paste with Submitting via quick submit
