Possibility of "stopped viewing quiz-taking page" the result of backing up to previous questions?

I've never seen this notation on previous tests in the moderation page/activity logs.  I've checked the community and see that there are two reasons for this notation. 1) clicking off the page 2) inactivity of more than 30 seconds.

I've checked and the latter is not the case. I don't want to accuse students of cheating without understanding if there might be other reasons. I do allow students to revisit previous questions and some of the leaving is at the end of their test. I just want to make sure that reviewing previous questions is not the reason for that notation.

I also had this question because our academic team had to use View Logs to inform decisions about Canvas Quiz cheating recently. I read somewhere that the "stopped viewing quiz-taking page" log could be a result of inactivity of more than 30 seconds (in this archived post). However, in the Instructor Guide "How do I view a quiz log for a student?", inactivity is not listed as a reason why this log would appear. I wanted to find confirmation of whether the "stopped viewing quiz-taking page" log can be triggered by inactivity because it's unclear from this forum.

While I don't have an exact answer to your question, whenever questions like this come up, I do always want to make sure everyone is aware of the the first bullet under the notes section of the quiz log guide.  It states, "Quiz logs should not be used to validate academic integrity or identify occurrences of cheating."  I know that makes things extremely difficult for everyone if you think there has been a case of cheating or misconduct, but since Instructure has that in the guide, I think it's extremely important to consider.  I believe there are a lot of different reasons that possibly misleading messages could make it into the log (network connectivity issues, browser issues, notifications popping up and stealing focus from the browser, etc).  I think all of the possible unknowns may be one of the reasons that Instructure made that statement.  I guess more info about how the quiz log is generated would be nice, but it also may be almost impossible to account for every situation too.

I know this isn't a solution or answer, but I feel that it's important info for everyone to know.

We're seeing this log of "Stopped viewing the Canvas quiz-taking page.." frequently on some students' quiz logs, but the pageviews for the student during the quiz don't show any other activity outside of the exam. Perhaps intermittent internet connectivity issues could be causing this log entry? Or perhaps the 30 second lapse of inactivity is actually logged?

The time stamps don't indicate that. I find if I ask them not to go back and review questions until the end, it doesn't make those notations, so I do think it has something to do with them either going to other pages, or with the clicking back to the previous question. There are no such notations when they go through all the questions and then go back.

I also am more mindful to tell them to turn on "Do Not Disturb" and to close anything running in the background.
