I am trying to find a way to make individualized, recurring calendar invites for students that cannot be viewed by other students. As a speech-language pathologist providing individualized instruction, I cannot set one calendar for all of my students AND I cannot have other students/family be able to view another student's calendar due to FERPA (as this would show what services the student is receiving).
How can I create individual, recurring calendar invites for students? Similar to and individual Google Calendar invite that only the invitee can view. I have not been able to find a way to do this. I have attempted to make Assignments that are due at a particular time, but this would be unreasonable to do every week for every student. I also cannot maintain 40-50 separate Canvas courses to individualize for each student in a separate class to use the calendar in a more anonymous way.
Additional idea...if there was a usable calendar option, for it to integrate with other major calendars, such as Outlook. This would help show time blocks on my calendar while I'm in direct instruction to prevent over-booking with other appointments.
Hi @SLP ,
I would say the best way to go about this is to go into your People tab in your canvas course. From there, I would go to "Student Groups" and create a group for each individual student. So for example for one of the groups, if I had a student named Avery Smith, I would name it: Avery Smith Calendar or Avery Smith Events.
From there, each group would have one student or two or however many you'd have, and each group would have their own calendar.
The ONLY ISSUE IS: you must be in the group to make events, and generally teachers are not able to join groups. However, if were able to do something such as adding a student account to your course that you'd have access to, then add that account into all the groups. It's important that you make it a student group and not a group under your own section that you create as a teacher, because students can only be in one of those groups. Student groups allow students to be in an unlimited number of groups located under the 'Student Groups' tab.
That's really the only solution I'd give... canvas doesn't really allow you to create a personal calendar for each individual student.
I hope this helps at least a little bit, feel free to reach out with any more questions or concerns!

Does this idea keep the students anonymous from each other?
Is this something that could be submitted for a suggestion/idea? It would really increase the ability for students to track schedules more easily.
Hi! You could take a look at Ideas. 🙂
How do I create a new idea in the Instructure Community?
Sorry that this is a late response - yes, this would keep the students anonymous from each other.
