How do I set up multiple options for student submissions on one assignment? I would like to offer students the option to write in a textbox, submit a PDF, or connect to a Google Doc. How do I set that up?

Hello, @csumption . When you add your assignment, make the submission on-line. You then get many choices; you can choose 1, some or all.

What if the instructor wants to allow for uploading a document OR turning in a paper (in person)? Looks like the only option is to set up the assignment as an online assignment, then enter/change the grade for the in person submission.
@pazehoski the online option will allow a document to be uploaded (file upload). You are correct if the teacher chooses to accept a hand-written assignment, then the teacher would need to change the grade. However, the teacher could make the assignment an on-paper type.
Just to clarify:
I do not have the option to choose both "On Paper" and "Online" for submission types of the same assignment?
I typically ask for paper copies for those in class (we do a lot of problem solving) and allow those who are absent to submit online. Having to choose only the "Online" for submission types generates anxiety since my students don't know if things are truly "missing" or just labeled as such until things are graded.
Thanks for clarifying.
@BritaNellermoe ...
That's correct...the drop-down list only allows you to select one option...not multiple options. You might want to take a look at this archived Feature Idea ... and in particular the links that Naomi provided in her response...as those might be of interest to you: Hybrid assignment types - Instructure Community.
Hope this helps a bit!
This is my issue too! If I have students who want to submit their in-class writing electronically, I have to set the assignment as "submit online" even if most of the class did it by hand and submitted in person. Even when I grade the in-hand submissions by putting the mark in canvas, students who submitted by hand have notifications that they haven't submitted the assignment! It's confusing and frustrating for them.
@BritaNellermoe @pazehoski You can always have the student(s) who complete their work on paper to take a picture of it and upload it to submit as well as turn it in to you physically. That is a work-around we use often and the students seem to do fine with it.
@NicoleSimmons that actually came up in a conversation here and we agree that's a great option for now! Thanks!!
