Making Multiple Attempts Exempt from Due Dates

I am an instructor in an accelerated high school. We just started using Canvas this year. I have experience with Canvas from a previous job, but I'm encountering a situation I can't seem to solve.

What we usually do at my school is this: students are allowed multiple attempts at an assignment. So long as they complete the first attempt by the due date, any subsequent attempts are not penalized for lateness. However, when my students make a second attempt on an assignment, it still assesses the late penalty.

I've attached an image as an example. The student got a 60% on his first attempt, which was before the due date. He got a 100% on his second attempt, but because it was four days after the due date, the system automatically assessed a 40% penalty, giving him the same score he had before.

Is there a way to disable the late penalty on any attempts beyond the first?
