It's exponentially easier to grade using a csv in Google Sheets or Excel; however, Canvas' import feature doesn't support importing comments for the grades making it borderline useless for my purposes.
I've seen other people have brought this up, has there been any further development with this?
Solved! Go to Solution.
Unfortunately, Canvas does not support importing grade comments using a CSV.
There is currently an open feature request for this which you can view and vote on here.

How do you call this "solved" when there is no solution?!
Educators are asking because this is necessary.
I am replying to every single topic started about "pushing CSV files into the gradebook" because Canvas needs to WAKE UP and REALIZE they are sooo behind the times. Apparently, Canvas does not understand the actual NEED for educators to be able to ***easily*** import CSV files into assignments.
School Loop has had this capability for years and it allowed teachers to import grades from other websites with EASE.
Teachers are tired of Canvas "speed" grader which is tedious and cumbersome, when it doesn't have to be.
Again... Teachers NEED to be able to easily import from other online assignment portals, such as Khan Academy grades, etc.
The TOP priority should be that at the BARE minimum, grades can easily be uploaded from a CSV file.
Secondary to that, comments should ALSO be able to be uploaded as well.
Please see the replies below and also note that the voting for this ended in 2016 after a request was made for this back in 2015 originally. It is absolutely crazy that this still hasn't been resolved although so many competitors of yours can do this with ease to the end user (teachers). You are going to lose people's business if you don't address this.
Why on earth is Canavs missing this incredibly basic LMS functionality? How are instructors teaching large lecture classes supposed to provide any feedback on this LMS? This should be a priority feature.
Please review all the comments below in this thread. You will lose business if this is not a featured/easy tool provided soon as many competitors provide this to instructors with EASE
Completely agree.
We have recently moved from Blackboard to Canvas, and I cannot believe it. I had hear good things about Canvas, but it is outrageous that they cannot handle simple things like this and ignore requests.
Blackboard allowed us to upload grade comments. It also allowed creation of columns with "text" format.
Neither is possible with Canvas.
How am I supposed to let the students know about their assigned seat numbers or secure tokens/passwords/ etc.
I have to rely on send batch emails to students and simply not use Canvas!
Canvas proposed solution: Just go back a couple of decades and stick papers to your office doors!
Creating an assignment, make it worth no points, and then use the resulting column in the gradebook to share seat assignments and secure tokens.
Thank you for the suggestion.
Seats (and tokens/passwords) have letters in them, "grades" on canvas cannot include letters, they only accept numbers.
I might have to use different methods/workaround for exam seat vs this vs that.
For something like passwords, I don't even have a workaround! I'd have to use mail merger and send 140 individual emails to students...
All of the above can be solved by simply supporting "text" entry in columns.
