I have a few "inactive" students in my Canvas class, but can also see that their activity time is showing activity in the course. How is this possible? And are these students able to see the course?

Hello @vickystrunz ...
I think the information in the light blue box at the top of this Guide will help to answer your question:
How do I deactivate an enrollment in a course? - Instructure Community - 750 (canvaslms.com)
Sing out if you have any other questions about this...thanks!

Hi @vickystrunz ,
It is important to recognise that Inactive is a status assigned by your system, and not the lethargic condition of your students.
I suspect that like our local configuration, your implementation is only using one of the four statuses available (inactive) and not using Deleted, Concluded or Suspended - see https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Canvas-Resource-Documents/Canvas-Enrollment-Status-Comparison/ta-..., each of which would be more granular/informative to the teacher, particularly on large courses. IN our case some of these would almost directly map onto our CIS.
Inactive students don't see the course, cannot participate or submit, do not receive communications, and may not appear in a number of reports and screens. Their data is not lost, but may be hidden from some views. We use this, amongst other things, for intermitting students and students who haven't completed Registration requirements.
Concluded would be a useful status to implement, as it prevents students who have completed the course from using discussions, submissions etc. but still allows them to view the content and what has already been submitted. In a large course it makes it easier to distinguish students with extensions, reassments etc.
hope that helps
