We use course cross-listing a fair amount in our school district and once in a while as a Canvas admin I get into this predicament:
A mistake is made and one of our other admins cross-lists a Canvas course into a different parent course than desired, but doesn't notice the error. Later, usually a couple weeks into the term I'm asked "Why is nobody enrolled in this teacher's Canvas course? It looks fine in our student information system." I check our sync with our SIS and everything looks kosher, so I have to assume its been cross-listed incorrectly - and it usually is.
But so far I've been lucking in finding the parent course into which the Canvas course in question has been erroneously cross-listed, by checking the other courses in Canvas the teacher teaches.
But the parent course could be conceivably any Canvas course in the term. Does anyone know of a way to determine the parent course of a cross-listed course without all the hide and seek?
thanks!

Sorry, yeah, I tried it a different way and I see what you mean. Do you have the roster for the course? Could you try searching for a student instead and then tracking where that student is now located?
Hi @BenPeck ,
How are you getting to the "child" course? Are you going through the admin console and finding it by name or course ID? If you are able to locate the child course, you can go to its Settings page and click on its name. Then look up at the breadcrumb, which should show you the "parent" course (as the next level up). Since the breadcrumb often uses a shortened form of the course name, you might need to click on it to go to the parent course settings and figure out where you are.
If you look at this guide and scroll down to where it says "Confirm Cross-Listing," you'll see an image with a red arrow pointing to the location of the parent course name.
How do I cross-list a section in a course as an instructor?
This procedure does not seem to be available in Canvas for Elementary, which does not display a breadcrumb trail.
Hi @TrishaMeyer1 ,
Thanks for your reply! Yes, I am finding the "child" course through the admin console by name. When I locate it, and go into it, then to Settings, and then click on the name of the course, it takes me back to the Home of the course. It does not show the parent course there at all or any breadcrumbs.
I do see the breadcrumbs by navigating to the parent course, go to settings, then to sections, and clicking on the same "child" cross-listed course there. But in this scenario, I don't know the name of the parent course and that's what I'm trying to determine.

Great idea, that works! When I look up a student that is supposed to be in child course (which I can get from our SIS since Canvas' enrollment is empty), in the students' course listing it shows both the parent and child course separated by a comma! Thank you!
This definitely works but not a great solution. It would be nice if there was something that identifies to what course/section the "child" has been cross-listed.
For example: Settings - Sections (This section has been cross-listed with ENG-1001-SB01) or better yet if you click on the link of the course in Admin - Courses it would take you to the master course, rather than an empty shell of the child.
Am I missing something? This seems like something that should be easier than it is.
