Grade notifications sent to students who have not been graded

I like to use Manual grading but I will Post grades several times during a Module as it is going on, as the submissions roll in. I know students can receive a notification for when their assignment submissions are graded then grades are posted -- but I did not realize that students who have not submitted yet can also get a notification whenever I Post grades for anyone else ("Your instructor has released grade changes and new comments for Module 1 discussion. These changes are now viewable.")...which can be very annoying if those students have notifications set to immediate.
Is it just a Discussion-type assignment...or for all grading?
Is it possible that I can still incrementally post grades manually during a module without possibly notifying the entire class that I "released grade changes")?
