Folder Structure in My Media

I am an instructor of many Canvas courses. After many semesters of using Canvas, I have many, many videos in My Media. I would like to arrange them into a folder structure. (Unfortunately, the "tags" in My Media do not solve this problem, because I cannot create sub-categories within a master category, and there is no way to see all existing tags to search.) How can I create a folder structure in My Media?

Are you using Canvas Studio (a paid add-on product from Instructure)?  Or, are you using Kaltura?  I ask because Canvas Studio does not appear to have a "My Media" folder in its interface.  And, though I don't have any experience with Kaltura, I think I've seen postings here in the Community where people refer to a "My Media" folder, and I believe that is a feature of Kaltura and not Canvas Studio.  I searched YouTube, and I found a number of videos about Kaltura and Canvas.  Here is one of them...and it confirms there is a "My Media" screen:

Yes, the videos come from Kaltura. (The videos are imported automatically from my university's cloud service, which uses Kaltura, to Canvas My Media.) The My Media tab is an optional Course Navigation Item in Canvas (like Announcements or People or Grades).

Hi @JB19457 ...

Although, as I've stated above, I have never used Kaltura, I am quite sure that the "My Media" course navigation button you are referring to within your course is not native to Canvas.  More than likely, the "My Media" button has been added as a part of the Kaltura interface.  So, although you can add this button to your course navigation (similar to how you can enable Announcements, People, Grades, etc.), it's utilizing the Kaltura interface.  So, although it is integrated into Canvas and looks like it's a standard part of Canvas, it's probably showing you your Kaltura content inside of Canvas ... just living on Kaltura's servers.  Again, since I don't have any experience using Kaltura, this is an educational guess on my part.  You may want to reach out to the folks at Kaltura to see if they have any options to make some kind of folder structure that you are requesting.  Or, if they have a way to suggest enhancements to their product, that might be another route for you as well.

Anyway... my $0.02 ... for what it's worth.  Hope this helps a bit.

Hi @JB19457,

I can confirm as both a Canvas and Kaltura admin that the "My Media" area is definitely from the Kaltura integration.

Having some sort of folder structure is something a lot of "Kalturians" have been requesting for quite a while.  Unfortunately, Kaltura's position has generally been that they offer tagging and you can search by the tags, so folders (even virtual ones generated by the tags) are not something they are prioritizing.  As people have more and more media, I think this will become more problematic, and hopefully cause Kaltura to change their mind.  This request would definitely be something to have your institution Kaltura admin file with them on your behalf to they see growing interest.
