Embed Text Entry Box in a Canvas page.

Is there a way to embed (HTML or Canvas feature) a text entry box for students to submit their writing to?

I realize the Assignment page has the ability to select 'text entry', but I am trying to keep students on the same page I've built.

Is it possible?

This came to me as an idea from the Youtube video: "Beyond Canvas Pages: Create Interactive Content That Will Wow Your Students (Maeve Daly)", at which (timestamp 24:47), I saw a text-entry box (see photo attachement).

I'm not sure if your school has enabled New Quizzes yet in your Canvas environment, but you might be able to accomplish something similar to what you are looking for using New Quizzes.  Basically, you would create a Stimulus item in your quiz, and then you could create an essay question which would allow your students to input whatever text they needed to answer from your question(s).

Do you think this might work for your needs?  If you do not yet have New Quizzes available to you in your Canvas environment, then you would need to talk with your school's local Canvas administrator to see when they plan to turn New Quizzes on for you and the other instructors at your school.

Our institution does have New Quizzes enabled, but that isn't what I'm looking to do.

My goal is to embed (HTML) or via Canvas feature the actual text entry box onto a Canvas page (not assignment page, quiz, etc).

For example, embedding a Google doc or Google form (using HTML) onto a Canvas page can be done; however, the student writing wouldn't import to a Canvas assignment page. Also, the formatting is a bit-let's say-clunky looking.

Hi @ShawnHoutsinger ...

I *think* I understand what you are describing.  Give this a try...  On the page where you want to embed your Google Doc/Google Form, use the RCE (Rich Content Editor) to click on the "Insert" menu, and then choose "Embed".  You can then paste in the embed code that you've harvested from Google, and *hopefully* that will place the content on your page where you'd like it.  More information about this can be found at:

I know how to embed Google docs, forms etc.; my main query is whether or not it is possible to do this internally using Canvas, i.e. does Canvas have a 'insert text' (entry/box)?

The attached photo (from my initial) highlights what I'm looking to do.

Hello @ShawnHoutsinger ...

No, the RCE (Rich Content Editor) within Canvas does not have the ability to insert text fields like you are hoping.  While I understand you'd want the text fields to appear underneath content that you have built on content pages, you could essentially accomplish the same thing with New Quizzes...it's just that the "look" of your content would be slightly different than what you had designed on a regular "Page" in your course.  Otherwise, you might have to resort to embedding Google Docs/Google Forms (or Office 365 content similar to Google) in your course.
