Hi,
I am unable to move my courses around in the dashboard! Any help is appreciated!!!
Solved! Go to Solution.
I just confirmed on firefox (I am assuming that chrome is the same way) that as an instructor I can rearrange my dashboard, but as a student I cannot. I use chrome, but I have several scripts enabled that I did not want to turn off and try in student mode in chrome - which is why I tried firefox.
according to this guide page on the student dashboard, you should be able to drag and drop the classes.
I tried the move option (click on the ellipses for a course and select move) - that did not work in student view either. So from the student guide pages, it says you can move the courses on the dashboard, but operation wise it is not working currently.
My suggestion is to contact your Canvas admins at your school and list everything you have tried in rearranging your dashboard. Ask them if they can duplicate the issue and if so if they would contact Canvas support.
It sounds like there is now an issue with where I am assuming there wasn't one for you earlier.
Hi everyone... so I checked with one of the Canvas Community Managers, and she said that it should be possible for students to move the course cards around on the Dashboard...as detailed on this Guide:
How do I view my favorite courses in the Card View... - Instructure Community (canvaslms.com)
She suggested that you contact Canvas Support about this ... because it's not functioning as it should.

Hopefully this will get resolved soon for students.
What are you accessing Canvas on? You can only rearrange dashboard cards on the web interface.
Yes and the courses wont move!

Hi Community,
I have the same issue It seems I cannot rearrange course cards on the canvas dashboard anymore. Has there been an update?
I use to be able to drag the course cards around or move up/down. For some reason, it is not allowing me to do this anymore. It keeps it in Alphabetical order but I need it in the order that the courses will run.
Thank you.
Same here - worked fine last year and during summer. I can still click and drag like before, but the courses won't actually rearrange at all. Going into options and using the Move buttons doesn't do anything, either
same here
I'm curious: what browser is everyone using?
I'm on Chrome and I haven't seen any issues.
Also on Chrome here, latest version.
Something I just found: nothing happens when pressing the Move buttons, but if I close the tab and reopen it, it updates to what I input. It's... weird, but it *technically* works?
EDIT: Hmm, correction: it works sometimes. Canvas is being very finnicky
Was that as an instructor? Or as a student? The issue is the student view.
I am still seeing the issue in firefox today - have not checked chrome
Blahhghhgh...I didn't see your original reply way back up the thread.
Confirmed that cards don't rearrange in student view.

Hey,
POSSIBLE HACK - ORGANIZING DASHBOARD ON CANVAS
I'm a senior here at SVU and yes I also ran into the same problem. As I like to color code and organize/group my courses in an orderly way that makes sense to me this was a bummer. But I think I found a simple hack to get it to work for me...i've been able to completely organize my courses and it worked multiple times so far without fail so I figured I'd share.
I have chrome on my laptop as my main browser so I logged into canvas via the web: once I open to my dashboard and select the grid layout I go ahead and click on the 3 dots of the course i'd like to alter (either color or move) select the ones I want [it won't change as expected] but then I click the course itself INSTEAD of refreshing the page. It will navigate to the course homepage at which point I simply click the back button on the browser and the changes on your dashboard will appear
hopefully this helps!!! let me know if you try it and have success!!
all the best
Thanks for the workaround. Hopefully others will see this thread and see that there is a possible way to move the courses.
However, Canvas still needs to fix the issue. If it works for instructors, then something changed causing that functionality to go away for students.
This is marked as solved but the "solutions" do not move my course cards.
What is marked as a solution is that there is nothing that can be done as Canvas currently exists and that it is an issue with Canvas that needs to be reported to them as an issue using the links that @Chris_Hofer mentioned in his solution post.
Nothing will be done about the issue until requests are sent to Canvas support - and more than likely if they get hit with several requests.
