Why, all of a sudden, do we have a big comment box in Canvas? I liked the box that expanded as needed.

Are you referring to the partial RCE (Rich Content Editor) that is now available in the SpeedGrader?  If so, this was part of a recent Canvas Deploy Notes.  Check out this link for more details:

Is there a way to increase the vertical size of the comment box in SpeedGrader? Since the last update, it limits the vertical height to maybe 10 lines of text and I would like to see my whole comment back to a student and not have to scroll up and down to see what has already been discussed. I know about two weeks ago, the box would automatically keep expanding vertically (never had manual control) but it was so nice to be able to make multiple points and have the comment box expand in size and not have to scroll back and forth

Unfortunately, I do not see any tools to allow you to resize that box...such as a little grab handle at the bottom right corner which some places like the box I'm typing in right now have.

Any chance this feature gets added? It would be great to be able to resize that text entry window

Unfortunately, that's not my call...as I don't work for Instructure, and I don't have much inside knowledge on what their internal roadmap looks like.

The best thing I can recommend is for you to submit your idea over in the "Ideas and Themes" space here in the Canvas Community.  You can read more about how to do this by looking at the Guides listed under "Ideas and Themes" here: Instructure Community Guide - Instructure Community (canvaslms.com)

I think it's great that a partial RCE is now available in SpeedGrader. I like that I can draw attention to key points by using boldface.

I also need the comment box to go back to the smaller adjustable size. 

Please return the assignment comment boxes back to the size they used to be.

I now have to scroll down for every comment I make in order to submit it.  

On a typical week I make over 216 comments and fewer mechanical movements in my arthritic hands would be very helpful (and more accessible).

It is an extra movement that I never had to make before (previously I could adjust the space to accommodate).
