Change to the way editing your name works?

It appears there was an update in July that when the preferred name settings were consolidated into one section, resulted in the checkbox settings not working the way they used to.

In our testing, with "Users can edit their name" unchecked and "Users can edit their profile" checked, students are not able to edit just their Display name under Profile settings. When "users can edit their name" is also checked, the user then has the ability to change their Full Name, resulting in Grades not matching SIS.  I'm sure you can see this would be problematic. 

Anyone else seeing this issue or heard of it before?

Hi @Justin_Reynolds,

I do see the same thing in our Canva instance right now.  Admittedly, we have never let students modify their display name in Canvas itself (this happens in our SIS then flows to Canvas), so I can't say if the UI change over the summer affected this or not.  I'd suggest submitting the idea of letting students edit their display name as a different option than their official/legal name to the ideas area of the community for Instructure to consider as a future enhancement to Canvas.
