Hello. I've tried searching for this answer, but can't find it.
When I'm viewing the gradebook in the "Student View," the Name column is too narrow to fit most assignment names. (See Grades 1 attachment). I can fix that by using Ctrl and - to decrease the size of everything in the window to 90%, but students wouldn't know how to do that. Is there a way that I, as the instructor, can fix this?

Hi @PeggyR
I don't think there is a way to resize the student view of the grades column. The submitted date column was just added on 1/17, and it seems like that may be why the assignment name column is squished now. It would be good to contact Canvas support and let them know this is an issue for you so they can hopefully get an engineer to review the page design and maybe make some adjustments.

Hi @PeggyR
As far as I know, an Instructor can not set a default view for everyone. Students can individually adjust their view, such as by reducing the font size as suggested by you, or by dragging the column edge to make the column wider.
Hover till you see the width symbol (the two vertical pipes with sideway arrows on each side), press and keep pressed the left mouse button, drag to desired width, and release the mouse button.
This is fairly standard behavior for spreadsheets, so your students should know.
I think what you showed is the instructor view of the gradebook, but I'm asking about what students see. In the screen capture I had attached, there are no column edges visible to hover over or drag.
@PeggyR ...
I tried searching for existing Ideas here in the Community where someone might have suggested adding a way to adjust the column width in the "Grades" page from a student perspective. However, I wasn't able to find anything that matched words I was looking for. You might want to create a new Idea yourself so that it might be considered down the road. To create your own Idea, please follow the instructions outlined in:
I know this isn't a direct answer to your question, but I hope it will help in some way.

I'll do that. Thank you.
Update: Canvas Support says they cannot reproduce this problem. They sent me a screenshot of my course's gradebook where everything displayed correctly.
Could it be that they are testing it on a giant monitor, and I'm using a 15.6" laptop?
I know this question is 10 months old, but it doesn't look like anyone answered this question. This is absolutely the case. If the person testing it on their PC looked at your screenshot, they would realize that as well. 🙂
If you regularly use your laptop in class, you could ask your IT Dept. for a larger monitor and a maybe also a docking station for ease of connection. Your screen resolution can potentiality change the display size of the grades screen also, but it depends on the specs. of the laptop.
