I am wondering how I can see 2 courses that are offered by 2 different schools in canvas. both are offered by VA community colleges which use the same host canvas but I can only see one course from one school and this worries me for the upcoming semester. will I easily be able to see . any tips for this?
Hello @dsmith6223 Thank You for posting your question. Happy New Year!
More than likely, the two schools you are taking courses at will have two separate URLs that you log into. For example, one school may have a Canvas URL of SchoolName1.instructure.com while the other school may have a Canvas URL of SchoolName2.instructure.com. These are two separate Canvas environments, and therefore you would have two separate logins. It's also highly possible that the login scheme (username/password) you use for the first school will be different than your login credentials for the other school. (I would not recommend using the same password for both logins...as website security continues to be a hot topic these days.) Hopefully, you have both sets of login credentials for both Community Colleges. But, if you don't, I would recommend that you get in touch with that school's IT department, their Help Desk staff, or a local Canvas administrator at that school to make sure you have the information you need to access your course(s) at that school.
Good luck! Please let Community members know if you have any other questions about this...thanks!
Adding to what Chris wrote, if you log into the second school's Canvas and don't see your course, it may be because it's not available yet. That school may delay putting the students in the course until right before the course begins. This is especially true at the beginning of the semester. Some other reasons a course may not show up are listed in Why can't I access my Course as a student?
Also make sure that you're checking the courses at both schools by going to Courses > All Courses and not just looking at the tiles on the Dashboard. It may be that the course is listed under the Future Enrollments section and your institution has the dates set so that students cannot get into them yet, which would keep them off the dashboard.
If someone knows something different, please let us know… Right now, canvas doesn’t have the option to be able to navigate between two schools or colleges. I found one has to log in to one school and log out to log in to another school. It’s actually really frustrating and time consuming if someone knows something different, please let us know… annoying and something they should fix because obviously in a new era, people are having to attend more than one college to get the prerequisites they need for their dreams and goals. I personally probably will not use canvas for both schools. I’ll probably just login on the Internet because it’s easier.
@MayaJamal ...
It is possible to be logged into to separate Canvas environments (two different schools that use Canvas as their LMS) at the same time. Just utilize tabs in your web browser. In one tab, you can log into the first school's Canvas environment. In a second tab, you can log into the second school's Canvas environment. Then, you can toggle between them as much as you want. I've done this many times (as a Canvas administrator), and I've not had many (if any) issues at all. I just need to be careful and aware of which Canvas environment I am working in at the time. There is no need to log out of one Canvas environment to log into another Canvas environment...especially if the two Canvas URLs for both schools are completely different.
I hope this helps to clarify things a bit. Sing out if you have any other questions about this...thanks!
What about on the mobile app? Is there a way to be logged into both schools at the same time on the app, with out having to log in and out? Or is using web browser tabs the only solution?
Hi @Alison661 ...
Yup...you can switch between accounts if you are signing in to two or more different Canvas environments. Here's a student Guide for both iOS and Android:
Hope this helps!
It's nearly four years later. Does this feature exist yet? Parents with kids in two schools is pretty common as the kids age.
