[New Quizzes] New Quizzes new question type: Audio recording

Current Situation

The current audio submission tool is decent, but it is neither robust nor efficient, and, most importantly, it is not available for quizzes.

Problem

For second/foreign language courses, speaking is the language skill that needs most attention because it is so logistically difficult to practice and assess. While reading, listening, and writing skills can be assessed on Canvas in quiz form, speaking skills cannot.

For speech courses, assigning and grading online homework/quizzes that require actual speaking can be cumbersome or impossible. Public speaking and debate courses also have few opportunities for teachers to evaluate argumentative skills in quiz form.

Solution

I propose Canvas adds an audio recording quiz question type. I added some desired complementary features for ultimate functionality and control in the comments section below.

Benefits for Teachers

  • Language/speech/public speaking/debate teachers will be able to assess speaking skills/pronunciation/argumentative skills/other speaking abilities on Canvas and plan future materials according to the students’ performance.
  • Language/speech/public speaking/debate teachers will be able to give direct feedback to students for speaking. This is very difficult in a classroom.
  • More benefits will derive from the desired complementary features in the comments section below.

Benefits for Students

  • Students will get teacher feedback on their speaking skills.
  • Students will be able to play back their responses to understand teacher feedback and/or evaluate themselves.
  • More benefits will derive from the desired complementary features in the comments section below.

Additionally, if the desired settings below (in the comments) are implemented, the entire audio recording quiz questions would be streamlined.

@hesspe ‌ I participated in a Canvas webinar today.  The Canvas representative stated that even Adobe is telling people not to use Flash anymore.  So, I am taking that to mean that eventually everything in Canvas will eventually be moving away from Flash.  The sooner the better, right? 🙂

@kidsonh ‌ Definitely for music!  One of our choir teachers embeds audio clips of songs they are working on into an assignment.  The students can start the audio clip (need to have a little buffer time in the beginning) and have it playing in the background while they record themselves singing using the rich content editor.  I have a band teacher that is interested in trying this with her band students in the future as well. While this may not be a perfect recording, it can be very helpful to the teacher to listen to the students at convenient times and has given back valuable class time to do other things.

ysmalls‌ Yes, you're right, it was archived. But now it is open for voting again! Thanks for the heads up. Smiley Happy

Hi!

I am also a world language teacher.  I would love to see a tool that would like to see the ability to create a series of questions that students would answer (interpersonal) within a given time. Then be able to play back all of the student's answers by pressing one button.  I used to use ClearAudioDropbox but the website is no longer available.  I have used the canvas recorder to have my students to submit their speaking assignments, but the results when they're using their Chromebooks to record are very distorted and hard to understand.

@c_kennedy ‌ I feel your pain - I've also had students with inadequate laptops try to submit recordings. It was very trying for them, and I couldn't properly assess their speaking skills.

I'd like video to be robust in quizzes as well!

2020 is the year that Flash is supposed to be gone for good. We've been busy moving away from Flash for all our content.

@c_kennedy ‌ I would like the feature to have a time limit so the student only has to worry about hitting record and then start reading a passage for practice. At the time limit the recording would then auto-stop for them.
