[Groups] Improvements in activity group grade column

We'd like to share this request for improvement with you. If you have the same need, please feel free to comment. We'd love to hear your thoughts.

Please find here improvements required on the activity group grade column in the grade book:

Need

1. Add a configuration option to override the activity group grade. e.g.:

This feature should be controlled by a configuration option that would indicate if users can override the grade created automatically for a group of activities. This config should be set in an activity group context, not in a course context. By default it should be disabled.

Also, it will be great if this new feature can also be set (enabled or disabled) by API or mutation.

2. Allow to hide the activity group columns in the gradebook to the students. This new option to hide the  grade column can be set if the override option is previously enabled.

Why

The calculation rule for activity groups may be more complex than the way Canvas does it. Simple weighting does not meet the needs of some institutions when there are additional parameters in the calculation rule, for instance: offline activities. Also, hide the grade by the teacher would avoid confusion if there are external factors that affect the final grade.

Advantages

• Flexibility.
• It will be possible to adjust the grade if there is an additional external element that could alter the final grade of a group of activities.
• Control according to the rules of the course.
• In the future it will be possible to associate the feature to a permission.

Thank you for sharing this very well-written Idea! However, before opening this thread to a conversation, please limit it to a single feature request. Having one Idea per thread allows the Project Managers have a better understanding of the various needs Canvas users share. It also allows Community Members to have more specific conversations.

Sorry for the late response. How we see it is: both are steps from the same idea. The second one is not like an independent idea, it's just something that we need to enable or not the idea that we have about overriding the activity group.
