[Course Settings] Extending Course Access

Problem statement:

Students do not always complete the course during the set term dates. Many schools have different policies on letting students finish a course past the term date. there is no easy way for this to happen in canvas. I have faculty create a new section called incomplete etc. and they have to enter the dates then add the student to that new section. this may have limitations for other schools due to their permissions. the admin may have to do it for every single student etc.

Proposed solution:

a solution would be for Instructure to make it possible for faculty to select a student and give them access to participate in the course past the end date of the term. a simple click of a button would make this process easier.

Thanks for your submission! Based on what's being asked here, I've identified a theme that I think this would fit well with. It's called Expand support for student-driven learning in Canvas. I've associated this idea to the theme.

Problem statement:

Opening a course beyond the term date must be done for the whole course, all students. This allows them continued access to course content and materials that may not be desired (eg quizzes).

Proposed solution:

Create a way to extend a course for just one student or select students to a specific date.

Problem statement:

If a student receives and incomplete in a course and needs to regain access for a period, for example, an additional 60 days. we extend the course close date for that time period. This solution gives the student the required time, but it also leaves the course open for all students who were in the course.

Proposed solution:

I suggest that the course could be opened for one or more specific users only, the same way that a module can be published for one or more students, or the way that assignments can be assigned to one or more people. This is useful because students do not like to see courses on their dashboards that are not current. The solution for unwanted old courses is to use the "favorites" but that is a workaround. A student shouldn't have to take any action to work around an issue caused by one of their classmates who received and incomplete grade.
