[Assignments] per-user-reattempts for assignments

Your new "Assignment Allowed Attempts" feature is useful and aligns the behavior of assignments and quizzes in Canvas. Please consider adding the option of per-user-reattempts for assignments. This can be done through moderation for quizzes and is very handy in our standards based assessment environment. Our students can request a reattempt on assignments and quizzes after demonstrating that they are better prepared.

Here is another forum discussing a similar issue, which was initiated in 2016. Either one of these developments would be a net positive; I either want to be able to be able to grant another attempt without deleting the first submission, or I want to be able to delete the first submission to reopen the attempt. The former is preferred, but realistically either option would suffice.

Problem statement:

An assignment was produced for students to upload a file and were given 2 attempts. One student accidentally submitted the wrong paper and I could not allow another attempt like you are able to do in a quiz.

Proposed solution:

Allowing or moderating an assignment for extra attempts to individual students would be a great benefit.

Problem statement:

In Assignments, there is no way to allow a student to resubmit an assignment unless there are additional attempts remaining for that student. If a student has used all of the available attempts, the only way to have the student submit again is to add additional attempts for all students. Example: Mrs. Smith sets up an Online > Text Entry assignment for her students to submit their essays. Some students submit essays that are incomplete. She would like to allow those students to try again after they have met with her individually, but not everyone meets with her. Currently, the only way to allow students another attempt would allow the students who did not meet with her to also submit.

Proposed solution:

In New Quizzes, the teacher can use Moderatation features to allow individual students additional attempts (or re-open a previous attempt) without adding additional attempts for all students. Having the same options in both Assignments and New Quizzes would improve the teacher experience and would also promote best pedagogical practices.

Problem statement:

Assignments must be reopened to all students to allow anyone to have an extra attempt when all attempts have been made. While a new block for due date may be added with a singular student's name, it requires setting new due date and end date parameters.

Proposed solution:

It would be effective to create a 'moderate' option in assignments similar to the 'moderate' option in the quiz build that would allow teachers to give students extra opportunities to submit without reopening to entire classes or creating new date blocks for students. It could be created under the EDIT option for assignments by adding a 'Moderate' tab next to the 'Details' and 'Mastery' tabs within the edit choice. It could be set up the exact same way that the moderate option functions within quizzes.

Problem statement:

There are times when students submit work to the wrong assignment. An example is a student uploading the wrong file to an assignment. If a wrong file is uploaded, there is not a way for instructors to clear that assignment attempt in order for the student to go back and upload the correct file. There is also not a way to grant just that specific student another assignment attempt in order for the student to go back and upload the correct file.

Proposed solution:

I have two different solutions to this problem: 1. Create a "Moderate Assignment" feature, very similar to the "Moderate Quiz" feature, where individual students can be granted additional attempts on assignments. 2. Create a way for instructors to clear the assignment attempt. Once the attempt is cleared, it should appear cleared for students and show they need to submit the assignment over again.

Problem statement:

If a due date on an Assignment has passed and I want to allow a student to resubmit, I can do this with the 'Reassign Assignment' button under the Comments box in SpeedGrader. However, if the assignment is set to only allow one submission, the student still cannot resubmit because they already used their one allowed submission. The only way I can find to allow them to resubmit is to increase the number of allowed submissions in the Assignment Settings, which allows every student the ability to resubmit.

Proposed solution:

- Make the 'Reassign Assignment' button override the 'Allowed Submissions' setting on an Assignment or - Make it possible to Moderate Assignments like Quizzes so I can go in and up the Allowed Number of Submissions for a single student or Preferred: If 'Unlimited Submissions' is chosen in the Assignment Settings, allow unlimited submissions only up until the Due Date on the Assignment, then allow only one submission only for students with No Submission until the Available Until Date. With this setting, using the 'Reassign Assignment' button in SpeedGrader should work, even after the Due Date. The previous LMS I used these settings. It gave incentive to students who submitted early (they could still resubmit before the Due Date if they wanted to change something), and students who missed the deadline could still submit for late credit up to the Available Until date, but were 'punished' by only being allowed one submission.
