Announcements should default to closed for comments

This idea has been developed and deployed to Canvas

An announcement is just that. It is usually a push out form the teacher to announce something without the need for commentary behind it.

E.G. "The room has changed for today to room 1234"

"Tomorrow you need to bring your iPad for the session!"

etc...

My idea is to make announcements "closed for comments" by default with the option to open them up for comments after the announncement has been posted.

Makes sense to me... Does it to you? If so, please vote this one up.

We have discussion forums for discussions and places where we can invite feedback etc... announcements are just that.

Just in case anyone driving by doesn't know about this, the ability to "Disable comments on announcements" is available, but it's well hidden under "View more options": How do I manage the options in the Course Details tab? (Scroll down in the Guide to the "View More Options" heading.) Having this enabled by default would be one less task I'd have to remember at the beginning of every semester.

Hi Renee and Stefanie,

I have voted for this because of the scenario below, where one or more students 'comment' on an instructor posted announcement (because they can by default- most instructors are unaware), but he instructor is never notified, because the default for that 'notification is turned off... see details below:

1.    Investigation revealed that there is a course setting for ‘Disable comments on announcements’ that is unchecked/not enabled by default.

     Default settings for

     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
     Default settings for
2.    Further investigation revealed that user account ‘Notifications’ for this feature is turned OFF by default… this means you would not be made aware of any ‘replies/comments’… see annotated screen capture below.
Notification default settings for
My discovery and realization that #1 and #2 above work against each other, and should actually be set in conjunction with each other has prompted me to open a support ticket with Instructure, to see if I can get them to change the defaults. I was prompted to submit a feature request, so I am tagging onto this one!
Please vote it up... Thanks!
Sincerely,
Total support for this, especially for large classes when the goal is just to announce something, and minimize traffic for all.  Thank you for adding this; I hope it is up-voted.
Didn't see this till it happened. I don't want this, because all my Announcements invite comments from student. Default locking means I need to unlock each Announcement in every class every time I make one. I cannot tell why the overall course comment button wasn't sufficient, but this will cause me a lot more work.
Can you clarify the Feature Idea process for me? This one went from "Archived due to lack of support" to "we went ahead and did it" without re-opening the Idea for discussion or seeing if it would gain more support currently. Had it been open at any time recently, I would have downvoted and commented why.
Hi  @thompsli
Thank you for this question.  I'm pretty sure we used to have a question about ideas coming out of Cold Storage in the How does the feature idea process work?, but I don't see it anymore.
It is always possible for ideas to surface out of Cold Storage when and if they are completed as part of a larger priority.  So they didn't necessarily drive the priority, but they helped inform it.  This is an example of an idea that didn't drive a priority, but provided a little bit of insight into why other channels of information (interviews, customer success managers, support) were hearing about this need.
So, I'm sorry this new feature function changed impacted your workflow in a less than positive way :-(.  I do appreciate you asking the question and providing your feedback here.
