Overwrite assignments during content migration

Hi Everyone,
We're using the course_copy_importer via API to push some assignments into courses. For example, let's say we have an ACCT 101 Exam with assignment ID '9639141' and then a list of Canvas Course IDs and push that same assignment into each of them in one shot.
It works fine, the problem we're running into now is that we've done this for a few terms and our teachers are also rolling over their own course content. So - when we do our content push we end up with duplicated assignments.
So I'm hoping there might be some way to intentionally overwrite assignments with matching titles during the import process.
Or another option might be to skip a content import if an assignment with a matching title is found in the target course?
Anyone have any ideas how this might be accomplished?
It's not the end of the world, we can just tell faculty to delete the duplicates, but it would make things a bit easier on everyone.
