Social sharing buttons

For some time I have been interested in including social sharing buttons in course listings in Catalog so that people shopping our courses have the option to share on Facebook.  For the most part the buttons work, except we've developed a kind of clunky work around to get them in by adding the share image as a hidden image div.  At some point, this option also ceased to work in that for whatever reason Facebook stopped rendering the images correctly in posts. (They still show up correctly in the post editor, but once it goes live the correct image doesn't show up in the feed.)  Does anyone have a good, foolproof way of setting up course listings so that images will look good in social sharing contexts?  I'd like to expand the availability to Twitter and Instagram buttons where we have smaller audiences, but there's a diminishing returns issue here.
