Celebrate Excellence in Education: Nominate Outstanding Educators by April 15!
What do you suggest to faculty who are opting between embedding a YouTube video or just adding a link and then selecting the preview automatically show? Are there any accessibility issues to consider between the two options?
I have a faculty who uses the link/preview combination because if viewed in the preview, there are no ads at the end of the video.
Both video options can be made full screen from the page. If the students decides to watch the link video in YouTube the ads will show at the end.
I suggested moving all the videos they created to Studio to eliminate a lot of the navigation issues.
Has anyone suggested instructors move their videos to Vimeo?
Thanks!
Sarah,
There is one issue that I have discovered with using Studio to link to YouTube videos is that the captions (if that particular video supports captioning) do not carry over inside of Studio because of copyright regulations. So if you need to have access to YouTube Captions, you will need to provide the direct link to that YouTube video. I would take your side with uploading self-created videos inside Studio because you can have the product create captioning for you to review after the upload.
Hope this helps some.

Thanks! Yes, I know about the CC issue if you upload a YouTube video into Studio and so I definitely don't recommend that if the faculty didn't create the video.
I'm just wondering if there's any difference in embedding versus linking a YouTube video. Seems the benefit of the link/preview is removing the recommended videos at the end.
I'm also curious about any accessibility differences between using a link (Canvas does ask for ALT text, but doesn't change the address shown) and embedding a video in terms of screen readers.
Howdy @sarah-canatsey ,
If you're handy with a HTML editor, this blog may help you to edit the embed code to accomplish something similar to what you want to do. As the article indicates, you used to be able to hide the ads with some code, but YouTube has changed to not allow that.

Sky,
Thanks for the blog link. Do you know if YouTube makes changes, if the whole embed is disabled or if it would just start showing the recommended videos again? I'm weary of giving faculty too many work arounds that are liable to become disabled by a third party change.
Sarah,
I understand your concern. Unfortunately I do not know when and if YouTube makes a change what the result would be because who knows what change they might make. Sorry.
