Celebrate Excellence in Education: Nominate Outstanding Educators by April 15!
Hello,
I'm trying to import students into a course but I'm getting An enrollment referenced a non-existent section ABC. ABC is in Settings > Sections of the course. What am I doing wrong?
Solved! Go to Solution.
Are you trying to do this through a SIS import? If so, it's not the section name that has to be used, it's the SIS ID that has to be specified. I really would not use a SIS ID of ABC because those have to be unique.
Here's a screenshot from Course > Settings > Sections and then editing a section. This one will not work with a SIS import.
@ntyler1 , greetings! This isn't my area of expertise, but I've shared this with the Canvas Developers group to try and get your question more visibility and hopefully a response!

ABC was just fictitious. I didn't know there were SIS IDs for sections (I'm new to Canvas). Thank you
There doesn't have to be SIS IDs for sections, but you cannot enroll someone into a section using a SIS import unless there is. You can enroll students into a course or into a section. Some choose to enroll in a course, we choose to enroll in a section and that makes it easier if you ever have multiple sections in the same course. SIS IDs have to be unique for that field, but you can reuse a SIS ID in a different field. For example, we have course SIS IDs with the same value as section SIS IDs.
Anything that you want to control through your student information system should have a SIS ID on it. Here's a list of some things that support SIS IDs: account_id, course_id, group_id, group_category_id, integration_id (for users), login_id, section_id, term_id, user_id
