Celebrate Excellence in Education: Nominate Outstanding Educators by April 15!
Hi @mala . This type of approach is frustrating, but there really isn't any way for Canvas to determine if an assignment is complete or incomplete when a student goes to submit. It would likely be left to the instructor and his/her policies and grading approach to change this behavior. Canvas will let you know if a student submits multiple attempts, so if someone tries to turn in incomplete work to meet he deadline, then comes back and resubmit a completed assignment, you can differentiate the two (if this helps).
If you are interested in hearing insight from others as to how they approach students who turn in incomplete work to meet a deadline, I would be happy to switch this from a question where this is likely one right answer, to a discussion where everyone can just add their ideas.
I hope this helps and best wishes!
Helpful indeed. It's a cultural thing. Thank you.
It seems (and I might be misinterpreting) that the problem isn't that students submit more than one assignment, but they submit something to avoid having it labeled as late, and then resubmit after they've worked on it (and that resubmission is after the due date). If that's the case, would putting an Until date on the assignment work?
e.g.: Jerry thinks he won't meet the deadline. He submits a junky assignment just to squeeze it in. The instructor has set an until date AND an end date on the assignment (and they match). So Jerry can resubmit as many times as he wants, but when the until date comes, he's going to be stuck with whatever was last submitted.
Personally, when I teach, I don't care if students submit once or 50 times to the assignment, but it's the last one before the due date that I'm going to grade.
Hi @mala . Just an FYI . . . I went ahead and moved this from a question to a discussion. It would be great to hear different ways folks here deal with the problem you mentioned.
All the best!
