I have seen this issue crop up every so often and hence wanted to put a post together on some steps you can take to do some initial troubleshooting.
If you are here, you may be looking at Canvas and seeing something like this:
Rather than a regular view such as:
Or equally you may see a single large icon such as the below (originally posted by @rlbrown21 on How do you get a HUGE dashboard icon ) For this particular one, please jump to Case 2.
Below are some great initial troubleshooting steps to try to get you back to the regular Canvas view.
Most often we have seen this caused by the browser becoming zoomed in. This can happen in a variety of ways, most commonly by holding the control key (Windows) or the command key (Mac) and scrolling with the mouse.
The easiest way to resolve this is by one of the following methods (browser dependent):
Occasionally temporary internet files in your browser can become corrupted, this can happen for a variety of reasons such as a loss of internet connection when loading pages.
Sometimes this can be cleared easily by holding shift and pressing the refresh button in your browser. That is the easiest step to try first, if that resolves it AWESOME! If not, continue on.
Before you undertake these steps, please be aware, clearing your temporary internet files means all the websites you are logged into will be logged out. This is by design, and clearing the temporary files will not clear out any browser saved passwords for example.
Clearing your temporary internet files is a great next step to check if this resolves the issue. The easiest way to do this is with the following (browser dependent)
Most cases I have seen are cleared out by the first two, however on very rare occasions we have seen issues with a theme change by an institution, or other causes.

I hope this has proven insightful and handy for anyone that faces Canvas not quite looking right.

Solved! Go to Solution.
Disabling VPN seemed to rectify the problem. Thanks
If you have Norton for your virus protection, open it up and turn off the VPN there. Then reload Canvas (worked for me) and then turn the Norton VPN back on. I then reloaded Canvas and it still worked.
We've noticed an uptick of these issues at our campus. We've offered this helpful discussion topic to help resolve the issues (seems like Norton Secure VPN is the culprit), and I also wanted to offer another solution that Canvas Support mentioned, which was for the user to flush their DNS cache. We've not had to do this, yet, but just wanted to add this additional troubleshooting step, in case it's helpful to others.
Thank you.
Most welcome! Always glad these tidbits can help out!
This Really helped. My dad did 7 days though. I was happy because I couldn't get on it for a week and a half. Everyone knows how much Canvas means in terms of assignments these days!
What if this happens on an iPad?
thank you!
I did everything and it did not move.
This exact issue happened to me today on my main computer using Microsoft Edge. I tried in Chrome and Firefox and the issue still persists (even after trying case 1 and 2) I tried on another computer and Canvas operates correctly. Any other suggestions. I really need to use my main computer to set up my classes for the Fall Semester.
Hi @PHILLIPCOHN,
I'd first suggest ensuring your operating system (windows, MacOS, etc) is up to date.
If it does appear to be updated, I'd very cautiously try disabling any security software (anti-virus, anti-malware, content blockers, etc) you might be running, as sometimes that kind of software can mistakenly block content you actually need. I'd disable the software, try browsing to Canvas to see if the issue is resolved or not, then immediately re-enable the security software.
If neither of those work, it could be an issue with your internet provider... I know you said it works on another computer, but I'm not sure if that second computer was using the same internet connection or if you tried from another location.
Let us know if any of this helps!

I was having this same problem and disabling the VPN also fixed it for me. Thanks!
My Canvas page has the icons MASSIVE. I tried Case 2, but refreshing didn't do jack (as I figured, I'm not dumb). I've tried 3 browsers, refreshed, restarted, and shut down the PC all to no avail. This is really pissing me off. Wifi is not the issue, so don't give me any response mentioning my connection. I need to use my computer for classes coming up. Please tell me the real solution to this.
Try disabling your VPN. Once the page loads, you should be able to turn your VPN back on.
I am having the exact same problem. I have updated all my browsers, cleared all histories and caches, held the shift button while refreshing, restarted my laptop, heck I even downloaded the Canvas app on my laptop and disabled my Norton laptop security. Nothing worked!! My icons remain gigantic and am finding it impossible to gain access to my course.
Try disabling your VPN.
I found a fix ! I had to use my laptop to login (which the screen was fine) and in my settings I turned on "High Contrast UI" and everything is OK !!!!!!! Yah !
And I didn't touch my VPN or Ad Blocker. They are both "on". All good !
