Celebrate Excellence in Education: Nominate Outstanding Educators by April 15!
Hi, Everyone!
I was wondering if there is anyway as an admin to view an assignment history (I'm looking for a tool akin to the "view page history"). For example, if a grader made a change to an assignment deadline for a specific student, can we trace it back to the grader? I see that I can view grade change history, but I'm not seeing anything pertaining to assignment details.
Thanks so much!
Best,
Kathleen
@kathleencool82 this is a great question.
I think what you are looking for is audit logging.
This is something I have inquired about several times, through support and our CSM, and so far it seems as though this does not exist. One source explained that the shear volume of transactions makes it impractical to keep logging records at that level.
I am very interested to see if anyone else can share any info they have on this topic.
Thank you for posting this.
Hi, @garth
Yes! I am looking for an audit logging. Thanks for posting/responding. While I understand that the amount of transactions is most likely enormous, this is a feature that could come in handy. What prompted me to post this was that we have a student with an extended assignment deadline. Right now, we have no idea who gave this student the extension and if it was warranted.
Thanks again!
Best,
Kathleen
@kathleencool82 I'm on the same page with you : )
There are times when forensic data would significantly help to resolve an issue, audit logging would be a valuable asset.
We've gotten this information from Canvas Support and it didn't seem to be a problem for them to get it.
That is good to know, perhaps I have been asking the wrong questions.
What kind of audit info were you able to get? Can you give a few examples?
Just called or put in a ticket asking who changed the due date (or settings) for X assignment or who deleted a specific thing from the course. <-- these seem to be our biggest problems with team taught courses.
Ah, I have been asking for access to logging, so I can run my own analysis.
I'll try asking for incident specific information next time something comes up and see what response I get.
Based on your inquiries so far, what has been the average turn around time on a request like this?
Pretty quick - normally the same day.
Thanks Kona, this is great.
No problem, it's definitely been a big help with you have 3 (or more) teachers going back and forth about who did what.
I've had similar issues when trying to determine who has modified a quiz. Canvas support has been able to help me out with these types of issues, although I'd like to be able to find this info myself, so if anyone knows of a way to check to see who has modified a quiz, could you please share? Thank you!
This is super useful! Thank you so much for your responses!!!
Adding a comment to say we'd love to have access to this data ourselves -- who changed which setting, when? For quizzes, assignments, grades, pages, etc. Also, for adding people to a course. Asking Support for the data is OK, but we'd rather have access ourselves, on our own timeline.
I totally agree! I'd rather be able to look stuff up (have access to the data) myself. Have you considered creating a Canvas Feature Idea for this?
For people who are API inclined there is a Course Audit Log in the API which may have the data you are looking for. It needs audit logging enabled so check with your CSM if you are not getting any data back from the API calls.
Course Audit log - Canvas LMS REST API Documentation
There is also a Grad change History API as well that can show the history of changes to users grade, when and by who.

hope this is helpful
Deactivated user this is great info.
Somehow I have overlooked this part of the API, will definitely investigate.
Thanks for pointing this out.
@firewuff - Does this provide any information that's not available from the UI Admin Tools How do I view course activity for an account? ? Because that is limited to a handful of events, changes in course state, resetting, copying... and I would love to have deeper details regarding changes to individual assignments, pages, etc.
Reading the API doc it looks to be very similar data. At a guess it may be the same data source
