Hi, 

My school just started using Canvas and I am still getting used to the platform. I have figured out most of the things except one that I need help with: 

My midterms are of two parts. Part A is all MCQ-style questions and Part B involves essay questions. How do I incorporate these 2 different parts in one exam and mark them separately and then add the marks as this is ONE assessment?

When you say that you want to mark (grade) them separately, do you mean that you want to have two separate grades show up in the Gradebook for your students?  So, for example, do you want students to see a grade only for the multiple choice questions...and then a separate entry in their Gradebook for the essay questions?  If you want it set up that way, you would need to have two separate quizzes (which you could rename as "Exam Part A" and "Exam Part B") in your course.  Otherwise, if you wanted, you could create a single quiz (renamed as "Exam" or whatever you want) with your multiple choice questions and then your essay questions after that.  In either case, Canvas would auto-grade the multiple choice questions because those have exact answers...whereas the essay questions would need manually be graded by you because students could provide a variety of answers.

Thank you very much for your quick response. 

I would like to grade them together so that there is one assignment (one grade) shown in the student Gradebook. I am using NEW QUIZZES 

If I create ONE quiz and add MCQs and also an essay question, and if I check the essay question manually, will Speedgrader add up the total marks (MCQ + Essay question`) and show it in the Gradebook under One Assessment? 

Also, I would like to know the order of the questions presented to the students. I want students to answer the MCQs first before moving on to the essay questions, is that possible?

Hi again, @EhfazNowman ...

Thanks for clarifying that you are using New Quizzes.  I believe everything you've said is correct.  After you would manually grade the essay questions, then Canvas would calculate the final total (Multiple Choice + Essay) for each of your students.  Also, whatever order you choose to have your questions (let's say 10 multiple choice and then 5 essays) will be the order in which your students also see those questions.  So, that's completely up to you how you want them to be displayed to your students...in whatever order you want.  But there are other settings you can configure in your quiz to shuffle questions and shuffle answers.  These Guides might help:
