[ARCHIVED] Percent Based Assignment Groups

Hi. Trying canvas for the first time so please excuse if this is a rookie question.

I am trying to institute a percentage-based grading system For example, we have a course in which quizzes are worth 30% of the grade. So far we have given 3 quizzes. An example student currently has the following scores:

Quiz 1 - 5/5 - 100% - A+

Quiz 2 - 4.5/10 - 45% - F

Quiz 3 - 5/5 - 100% - A+

Her current grade is showing 72% which is clearly 14.5/20 instead of 82% which is 245/3.

We would like the calculation of individual assignment groups to be the latter. Is this possible?

Hi,  @ksaiyed  Welcome to the Canvas Community and to Canvas! Within an assignment group, the intra-group weightings are determined by the points possible for each assignment, not by the percentage achieved on each one. The math is detailed in How do I weight the final course grade based on assignment groups?

In this case, a quiz worth 10 points will contribute proportionately more to the grade than a quiz worth 5 points, as you have determined. If the instructor wants all quizzes to be weighted equally within the assignment group, each one needs to be worth the same number of points.

In Old Quizzes, this is only possible by editing the points for each quiz question. In New Quizzes, an instructor can assign a top-down point value to the quiz, making it much easier to achieve that equal-weight-within-assignment-group status.
