When I type or copy an answer into an answer box in a multiple choice question I lose the formatting.
For example 1.7 x 106 cm becomes 1.7 x 106 How do I preserve the formatting for the exponent in
the answer box?

In legacy quizzes, there is an option to use the Rich Content Editor for multiple choice questions. That allows you to use all of the tools on it, including superscript and subscript and the equation editor.
You click on the pencil on the right side of the response to open the Rich Content Editor. You will need to do that for each response that needs formatting.
In New Quizzes, the Rich Content Editor is automatically applied to any multiple choice question, so there's no need to do anything special.
