Is there a way for me as the instructor of linking modules within one another without putting them as a pre-request or requirement? Or a way of linking assignments and/or resources so that I don't have to add to each day's module for my student users?

I am unable to find videos or resources.

I'm not sure if I quite understand the question. Are you trying to add a link to another module within your existing module? Are you trying to add material to more than one module?

How do you structure your modules? Are you working by unit/chapter, or by week?

Thanks for the quick response. Let me try to explain. My group is virtual right now, I've added new modules for each day with independent tasks to choose from during my office hours (see below), to help those who are overwhelmed by the weekly structure (as I usually give more than one option during this time).  I would like to add a module within a module to avoid adding certain tasks to each day's module. Hope this helps.

Unfortunately, there's not a way to do a Module within a module right now. There are a lot of Canvas users who have requested this -- Modules within Modules.

Have you explored Text Headers within Modules to separate items? How do I add a text header as a module item? 

I also love adding emojis (sparingly) to draw attention to key items. (If you are a PC user, the Windows Key + . is a lifesaver!)

Lastly, you could utilize Module Requirements to keep students on-track so they have to view the previous days' content before "today's". How do I add requirements to a module?

@KristinLthanks for the suggestions. The text headers work great for instructions. The module requirements also worked well, however I did notice that if you add an external  URL you can't add a requirement other than viewing the page. I would appreciate being able to collaborate further if you have suggestions.

From a design perspective, I would suggest you create a page for each day instead. On the page you can then link the activities and resources you want them to complete.

@gnoack I appreciate the suggestion. Because I release different activities per period block, I'm not sure if a page per day will work, as I schedule the module/certain resources to release at the period's start time. I find the modules help to batch the external tools and add requirements when necessary.

@kendallynn - With the differentiated assignments "release", you're right. The Page option may be complicated as items are listed but not always available to ALL students.

What would you like to do with the URL inclusion? I'm curious to see how you'd like that interaction measured/documented.

I would like to do two things with regards to URLs.

1. Add certain sites as an option in place of the worksheet or as an option for early finishers

2. Add a virtual field trip activity (just for fun, before the holiday break)

With those activities that need a little more granularity, you could always include those pieces in an assignment that doesn't require a submission or that doesn't count towards their grade. You can add those to Mastery Paths or assign them to specific sections of students. These enrichment opportunities could then be added to your module structure at the top of the week or within the progression of the day. ...and it'll all line up on their calendars, too!

@KristinL  one last linking question, is there a way to link Attendance as a requirement to a module?

@KristinL Is there a way to post a Read Aloud to a Module without having to create multiple assignments? I would like my class to only access to one chapter per day if possible.

There may be some alternatives that could work. 

1. You could adjust the due date/time and the content daily in a single assignment. The assignment would have multiple submissions, but you could use the Assignment Comments space to keep track of points, etc. Over time, you would also need to adjust the total points possible so it aligns with the feedback and earned credit documented in the comments.
2. You could create a journal for each student. This could be done by inviting students to create a journal in Google Slides (one page/slide per day) or an ongoing Google Doc. Either of those could be submitted by URL at the end of each week. If you go this route, there are some cool template shortcuts you can do with the original URL so students can make a copy of your "starting point" for their work. Another option would be to use Canvas Discussions and then make it a group assignment. The catch here though is that each student would need to be in a group by themselves to make the Discussion private. Each entry would be timestamped. In either case, you would need to adjust the total points possible as time progresses. (Here's another resource for you too: Is there a journal? - Canvas Community)

@KristinLthanks, unfortunately not all my group/class have access to Google Drive as we are not associated with a Google school. Is there a simple way to post it as a lesson rather than an assignment?

@kendallynn - You could use Pages to house this information and then gradually add to it. You could even check the box that adds the Page to your students' to-do lists. You could make one per week that houses lots of information, links, etc. ...though there's not a submission associated with it?

Oh! That's a really cool question! There isn't a way to do this (or at least that I know of). Could you make a 1-pt assignment that opens at the start of a class session only? Have them answer a quick "bell-ringer" or get-to-know-you question or something! You could quickly use the grade book to mark complete/incomplete and that could then unlock the next part of your module.

@KristinL if I have an assignment for a module and I want a file upload AND an external tool, is there a way to add both to an assignment without adding two separate assignments to the module(s)? For example having a worksheet but also offering Flipgrid.

If you have Mastery Paths, students could choose one assignment OR the other assignment, but that's more work for you. With a single Assignment prompt, unfortunately, the External Tool doesn't make it possible to have a regular online option at the same time.

Another question about requirements? If I am working on a module and I want to add something from last week's module as a requirement, is there a way to do so without adding the assignment to multiple modules?

Hi @kendallynn ,

I don't believe this is possible as requirements are set by what is in that module.  You can only set a requirement for what is in that module. 

However, it's is possible to duplicate the link the assignment in the second module. That said, I think it would be better to move the assignment to the new module.  I say that because I'm not sure if the requirement would be met if the student completed or viewed the assignment from the first module.  It may depend on what type of requirement you set.
