I can see that I can message students who scored less than 'x' in a quiz, but on their overall performance.  Is there a way to message the students who are getting less than 60% overall?

Do you have New Analytics installed in your course?

If so, from the Course Grade tab, there is a Message Students Who (mail Icon)

There you can specify a Score Range and put 0% to 60%. It will show you how many students will be receiving the message. You can click on the link with the number of students to see how which students those are.

If you do not have New Analytics turned on, you can go to the gradebook, sort by total grade, make a note of which students have less than 60%, and then go to your Inbox and send them a message.

I also had a similar question.  I wasn't familiar with the overall messaging, so I appreciate the response.  What I would like to do is a little different, and I'm not even sure if Canvas has this ability or if my college doesn't pay for the feature.  I would like Canvas to analyze a specific set of assignments that I select and look at each student's submission and filter out those students who show improvement.  In other words, if they scored higher on their second submission than their first.  I would like to send all students meeting that criteria a message on congratulating them for working hard and trying to improve. 

In addition, I would like to send another type of message to students who did not show improvement, a word of encouragement and an opportunity to learn more about students who may be experiencing other challenges as obstacles to their success, and send referrals to students who may need additional assistance so they can be successful, not only in my course, but their entire academic journey. 

So my question is, does Canvas have a function to filter just those students who showed or did not show improvement by comparing all graded assignments submitted by each student individually and be able to send a message just to those students who meet the criteria selected?
