Do you have to provide email address, or is it done through canvas?

The Inbox built into Canvas is the best tool for this. 

Here are the instructions How do I send a message to a user in a course in the Inbox as a student? 

User means any participant in the course, instructor or student. It's super handy.

The previous post is correct. I would add that if you click on "Account" and "Notifications" there are settings that will forward any messages in your Canvas inbox to your specified email accounts. You can also reply to students using your email account and the response will appear in their Canvas inbox.

For example, this morning a student sent me a message in the Canvas system. It was forwarded to to my university email account. I received the message on my phone and responded. 

I also have a feature turned on that sends any message I send in Canvas to my email account. That way I also have a copy on our university server in case I need to search for it in the future.
