[ARCHIVED] How do you shut off the Course Stream?

How do you shut off the "Course Stream" so it is not visible to students.  It misleads them.  None of your guides indicate how to do it.

 @frank_hatstat , the only way to turn this off is to pick something else for your course home page. Here's the guide that explains the different home page options and how to switch to something else as your home page - How do I change the Course Home Page?

 @frank_hatstat ​, if you picked a home page, then there is no way for the students to see the "Course Stream" (this is the middle part of the screen). Do you possibly mean the "To Do" list on the right side of the screen?

Hi Kimberly,

When I read your post, I didn't know what you were referring to. I finally found the assignment announcements where I see the DQ Case - Red Bull, but it shows that I'm not authorized when I click on the link. Also this isn't showing up in my to do list, and it's missing when I go to module 2. Are you able to access this?

Hi, Mary. Yes, I get the same "Unauthorized" box you posted above. I am not able to access the assignment portion for the purpose of submitting a response. The New Discussion - Chapter 16, DQ Case - Red Bull assignment was included on one of the " New Discussion" e-mails that the instructor sent over Canvas on 7/5/15, but I do not see it in the Modules anywhere. Glad to know I'm not the only one! Hopefully he can unlock it tomorrow and we can still have the opportunity to respond.

Is there anyone else out there that DID have access to this assignment and was able to submit it for grading?

I do not understand what you mean by "'New Discussion" emails that the instructor sent over Canvas on 7-5-2015" later amended by you to be 7-2. I do not send "New Discussion" emails. Please clarify this so we can resolve it.

Thanks for the screen print, Peggy. I can better understand now.

Using the "course stream" is of dubious value. Similar to Facebook, it is misleading as to what is important. This is a limitation of Canvas. I would suggest accessing all course work through the Modules. The module listing lists all work for the week. Although that DQ was not "published" and should not be visible to students, it is! You will probably find other items in that stream that are not intended for students to access as we go through the course. By way of example, I sometimes have multiple options for DQ's in a subject area and only select one to be available/published. This is an example as I selected a different DQ for that subject area than the Red Bull case. You will also notice that the dates listed have no relevance for students. They are not the due dates nor are they the dates they are available. They appear to be the dates that I released the item to the course site, which has no value for students. It may be of value to administrators. The listing does not identify what the date means. This appears to be another limitation of Canvas. I would caution using the Course Stream in any course as you have experienced, it can be misleading.

I was under the impression the "Course Stream" was shut off for this course. I have forwarded a service request to tech support asking how to do it.

As for the other item, I cannot access that link as I do not have Outlook on this computer and the link requires Outlook to open it. Can you send me a screen print of what you get when you click on the "New Discussion" link and also a screen print of where that link appears?

Thanks for sending your screen print. That DQ should not be visible to you. It appears your experience proves the dubious nature of the "Course Stream". As I said above, I have reported your experience to Canvas development and tech support. There is a summative DQ for all the marketing chapters instead on one for Chap 16. Below is what everyone should see when they go to Module 2.

If unpublished materials are showing up in the course stream, that is a bug. The stream should only show published materials. You might consider filing a bug report by using the help button in Canvas. That way, Canvas support can look at your particular instance and course to confirm the bug and pass it to engineering for a fix.

 @frank_hatstat , we've been interpreting your question to mean that you want to change students' view so that they are not confronted with the Course Stream; however, it occurred to me that what you are actually looking to do is to remove students' access to the course stream altogether (in other words, remove the View Course Stream button that appears at the upper right of the course home page). Is that correct? If that's the case--then no, there's no built-in way on the front end of Canvas that would allow you to disable that access; your back-end developers would have to customize your school's courses to remove that button.

Hi Kimberly,

When I read your post, I didn't know what you were referring to. I finally found the assignment announcements where I see the DQ Case - Red Bull, but it shows that I'm not authorized when I click on the link. Also this isn't showing up in my to do list, and it's missing when I go to module 2. Are you able to access this?

Hi, Mary. Yes, I get the same "Unauthorized" box you posted above. I am not able to access the assignment portion for the purpose of submitting a response. The New Discussion - Chapter 16, DQ Case - Red Bull assignment was included on one of the " New Discussion" e-mails that the instructor sent over Canvas on 7/5/15, but I do not see it in the Modules anywhere. Glad to know I'm not the only one! Hopefully he can unlock it tomorrow and we can still have the opportunity to respond.

Is there anyone else out there that DID have access to this assignment and was able to submit it for grading?

Thanks for the screen print, Peggy. I can better understand now.

Using the "course stream" is of dubious value. Similar to Facebook, it is misleading as to what is important. This is a limitation of Canvas. I would suggest accessing all course work through the Modules. The module listing lists all work for the week. Although that DQ was not "published" and should not be visible to students, it is! You will probably find other items in that stream that are not intended for students to access as we go through the course. By way of example, I sometimes have multiple options for DQ's in a subject area and only select one to be available/published. This is an example as I selected a different DQ for that subject area than the Red Bull case. You will also notice that the dates listed have no relevance for students. They are not the due dates nor are they the dates they are available. They appear to be the dates that I released the item to the course site, which has no value for students. It may be of value to administrators. The listing does not identify what the date means. This appears to be another limitation of Canvas. I would caution using the Course Stream in any course as you have experienced, it can be misleading.

I was under the impression the "Course Stream" was shut off for this course. I have forwarded a service request to tech support asking how to do it.

As for the other item, I cannot access that link as I do not have Outlook on this computer and the link requires Outlook to open it. Can you send me a screen print of what you get when you click on the "New Discussion" link and also a screen print of where that link appears?

Thanks for sending your screen print. That DQ should not be visible to you. It appears your experience proves the dubious nature of the "Course Stream". As I said above, I have reported your experience to Canvas development and tech support. There is a summative DQ for all the marketing chapters instead on one for Chap 16. Below is what everyone should see when they go to Module 2.

This is indeed a problem.

The activity stream shows when I add a quiz, even if it is weeks away. It shows all my discussions, even though all but the current one are in modules that are locked until a later date. I just had faculty lost in a professional development class because they thought the date on the activity stream was a due date rather than a post date. We should be able to make the activity stream unavailable by course.

This is actually a legit question, all these years later, and in trying to find out what was happening when I experienced the same thing, I found this thread.

As it turns out, people have had a course stream problem not because of bugs, but because of duplicating assignments when content is uploaded more than once after being published. If the class has started and someone re-imports course content, the course stream dump-publishes the due dates in the course stream and calendar, in my case erroneously (and I have no idea why, but it's kind of beside the point).

The Cause:

The course is put in Canvas, and the content uploaded into the course a first time (before or after the class starts). For whatever reason (for example, in my case when I had multiple sections and I fixed one sections errors then re-uploaded that new, fixed version into the other sections' shells) the content is re-uploaded or a different version is uploaded after the class starts.

The result:

The Modules section probably looks correct. 

The Assignment section will have duplicate Assignment groups.

The Course Stream will have a lot of "garbage" assignment dates and times.

The Calendar will also have a lot of "garbage" dates and times.

The solution:

There's two ways to fix this, but this is the fastest and easiest:

Go into your Assignment view and eliminate the duplicate assignment blocks, leaving only the ones that are correct and properly dated.

This will clear all the weird stuff including published things that should be unpublished, strange dates in the course stream and so on.

For those of you who kept re-stating "it's a bug" or "this should/'nt happen," it's honestly worth actually looking into problems like this, as I can't imagine that Frank and I were the only people having this issue. While it's user error, it's also a mistake that's easy to make, and easy to fix. 

Frank, it's way past date but I got you, fam. Next time, though... it might help to show screen shots of the garbage stuff in the course stream.
