Celebrate Excellence in Education: Nominate Outstanding Educators by April 15!
I want my students to have access to a Google doc to complete an assignment in class. I want each student to make a copy of the embedded Google doc first, complete the assignment, and then their individual document with me when they are finished with the assignment. So, I'd like to "freeze" the embedded Google doc so they can't make changes to it without first copying it.
Solved! Go to Solution.
Hi Kyla,
If you share your Google doc with read only permissions then students will not be able to edit the document but they will be able to make a copy of it and edit that copy.
Best,
Nick

koh and @ns3320 — use the /copy trick for your students to get their own copy of a master worksheet:
Hint: change the last bit of your Google doc link with “/preview” to adjust how it looks: "https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Tz_KuiU7ewnys12PdK8l1aLCWAeCWu5PfhwlfYbiqlw/pub?embedded=true" =default
"https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Tz_KuiU7ewnys12PdK8l1aLCWAeCWu5PfhwlfYbiqlw/preview" = no toolbar, margins
“https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Tz_KuiU7ewnys12PdK8l1aLCWAeCWu5PfhwlfYbiqlw/edit” = edit mode
“https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Tz_KuiU7ewnys12PdK8l1aLCWAeCWu5PfhwlfYbiqlw/copy” = create a copy for clicker

Thank you Nick. I just checked "student view" and students are getting the message below. Does this mean students need to log in to their Google account in order to use the Google doc? I'm not sure how they are supposed to authorize the integration. I couldn't even open the Google doc when I was in student view even though I embedded the file.
You need to authorize this integration in order to use it.
Please sign in to your Google account and authorize this integration.
Hi Kyla Oh,
We can't access Google Drive in student view because that account is not linked to a drive.
