I would like to start a group discussion for a 6th-grade class.  I listed questions in the Discussion link.  How do I allow kids to enter discussion to answer questions and respond to their classmates?

Unless I am missing something, if you create a discussion and publish it, then students can access it and participate.  If you intend it to only be available to groups or differentiated by groups, then you can also do that.

I would recommend checking out the Discussions Chapter of the Canvas Instructor Guide.

What I might have been missing is - are you looking for a discussion that can be used across courses? If so, then this cannot be done in Canvas, and you would need to look for an external solution.
