Is there a way to create a class directory where participants could upload a picture and some personal information that would then be available for others to read about them - as a way for people to get to know one another?

Hi!

I've seen some instructors create a discussion board that is dedicated to this, and it works well to connect course participants. Some instructors even go as far as posting a question each week, something that is about the PEOPLE in the course and not the academic content. (The featured discussion could be pinned at the top of the Discussion list or added as a shortcut from the home page.)

Another option, if it's for collecting contact information is to share a collaborative spreadsheet and link tot hat from the home page or from an assignment at the beginning of the class without a submission. students could share what they'd like and then have a resource to review throughout the term.

There are many options -- it'll be interesting to see what others suggest.

For my online courses during the first week students have to participate in a discussion forum where they have to post a picture of themselves, and reply to others. One of the questions I have them answer relates to course content that they view during the first week. I suggest that for the getting to know you part they can discuss: 

• Where you live and have lived before.
• If you have any pets; what they are and what are their names?
• If you work what do you do?
• Are you in school full time or part time?  What are you studying?
• What do you like to do on your free time (hobbies)?
• Is there someone you admire and what is it about them that you admire?
• A unique experience you have had.
• Places you have traveled to.
