When you create assignments and give them due dates, they automatically appear in the course calendar. These are linked back to the assignments from the calendar. Students can choose to hide content from a particular course from their calendar.
All graded assignments also automatically appear on the syllabus page (ungraded discussions and ungraded surveys are not). If you make the syllabus page available to your students (Course settings > Navigation) then they will have a course-specific list of assignments and dates that they will have access to even if they disable it on their calendars. The items on the syllabus page are linked back to their corresponding assignments.
