What is the black dot which appears to the left of a discussion before or after you pin it?

Thanks for your question and welcome to the community. The black dot is an "unread notification;" you can read more about them: https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-13108-415276774 

In that example on the page, their unread is blue. Sometimes, it's red. Depends on the institution's branding. Hope that helps,

As a sort of newcomer to Canvas, I always wonder if something like that indicates that students cannot see it, or if I've messed up.
