I was just sent an article that states the best way to utilize Google tools in the classroom is within the LMS - Schoology.

Can anyone provide how Canvas competes with this comment? Any comparisons would be appreciated.

 @gailc ‌, I might be wrong but it seems to me that Schoology is more for K12 than high ed, so I've shared this with the K-12‌ group in the Community. 

As to your question, it seems directed to the list in the article. I copied the list and added my comments/feedback. 

*Easily search, browse and use Google Docs directly from within the LMS

Yes, with the new Google Drive integration there is a link to Drive in my course on the left navigational links. 

*Distribute a unique copy of a Google Doc to every student in the class from within the LMS

Yes, this can be done as part of an Assignment. 

*Monitor student progress on an assignment in real-time without leaving the LMS

Technically, yes you could do this from Collaborations, but I've honestly never tried. 

*Submit their assignments back to the instructor with a single click

Students would need to go to the Assignment first, but otherwise, yes it is pretty easy and straightforward. 

*Place grades and feedback on the Google document within the LMS

Using Speedgrader and Crocodoc I'm able to provide this type of feedback from within Canvas. Yet, it's not actually part of the google doc - so if the student looked at just their google doc they wouldn't see the feedback. The student would need to go to the assignment to see the grade and feedback.

Canvas would benefit from looking at how Schoology integrates Google (https://info.schoology.com/google-schoology-integration.html ) documents. 

Schoology has three choices with Google docs: Assignment, In Progress, Submissions. It would be nice if Canvas allowed us to view Google Docs while our students are working on them. In this way, Schoology might be an easier transition from Google Classroom for K-12 teachers.

Maybe Canvas already has a feature like this.

If there isn't, a workaround might be to have students submit a Google document link instead of a Google Cloud assignment. The teacher could monitor progress. The problem I have had in the past, however, is that some of the students who most need scaffolding via monitoring "conveniently" forget to change their document sharing settings from private to anyone with the link.

I'm using a Canvas Free for Teachers account, and the Google Cloud option is a major step in the right direction; however, my students don't understand why Cloud assignments don't get a big green checkmark like the other submissions.
