Fundamentals of Accessible Digital Content in Canvas

Enhance the inclusivity of your Canvas courses! The Instructure Services team is excited to announce the launch of a new free course, available in all tiers of the On-Demand Training Portal (including the free tier) starting Monday, April 14, 2025.  This course is designed to guide all Canvas educators in making their learning content accessible to every student.

Simplify digital accessibility and demonstrate its practical application to your work through your learning in this course. You'll delve into the foundational principles of accessible design, learn practical techniques for identifying accessibility issues in Canvas, and acquire actionable best practices for your images, files, and course materials. You'll also gain awareness of common accessibility mistakes and discover where to access ongoing support and valuable resources to continuously improve your content's accessibility.

How to Access this Free Course

Access to the On-Demand Training Portal is easy with single sign-on functionality in the Canvas Help Menu located at the bottom of the Global Navigation Bar.

Start by logging into your regular Canvas instance at your institution. Once you are logged in, select the Help button from the Global Navigation on the left. Look for the Training Services Portal link in the list. The link is visible to all roles except Students and Observers.

Once in the Training Portal, type “Accessible” in the search box, and the first search result will be, “Fundamentals of Accessible Digital Content in Canvas”. Click “Enroll Now” to get started!

For additional help, refer to this guide with steps for accessing the On-Demand Training Portal.

More on the On-Demand Training Portal

As you explore this new offering, we encourage you to also leverage the wealth of training resources available in the training portal. This centralized space provides access to official Canvas Training materials. Learners can earn badges by completing courses and pathways, and benefit from engaging training videos that are under 15 minutes, include closed captions, and offer customizable playback speeds. To learn more about the On-Demand Training portal, refer to this guide or visit the Training Portal Subscription Levels site.

Hi @jsailor - THANK YOU SO MUCH for making this available! I just went through the course and it's fantastic. Is there any way, as a Canvas admin, I can keep track of how many users at my institution have enrolled and/or completed this course?

@mbmacdonald

Great thought! I too loved the course and asked my entire Acad. Tech team to take it!  I also added a link to our faculty portal and @jsailor it would be so useful to see who has taken the AMAZING course!!

@mbmacdonald and @MerylPoku thank you for the amazing feedback. We are thrilled you've found this course to be beneficial.

If you are a Portal Admin (different sometimes from a Canvas Admin), you have the ability to download reports.

Institutions can assign Portal Admins to their account. Contact your CSM or CSA team if you need to add or make changes to your current Portal Administrators. Admins will have access to the Completion Report dashboard. This includes the ability to generate and download a CSV report for all users. The completion report will include the following information:

  • Enrolled User Name and Email
  • Offering Name
  • Type of Offering - Live, On Demand, or Pathway
  • Completion Date or In Progress Stamp

To access the admin completion report, select the Admin role from the drop-down.

Select Generate Report to create a downloadable report. The New Report option refreshes the data, while the download option creates a CSV file of the data that can be filtered as needed.

Check out more documentation in the Community. Another space to find out more is in the On-Demand Training Portal "Walkthrough Course." In Module 1.9 | On-Demand Training Portal | Administrator Tools reviews more information with screenshots.

Thank you, @KCTesterman for providing such a detailed response.

And, @mbmacdonald and @MerylPoku, I am so thrilled to hear this feedback about the usefulness of this course. We'll be sure to share with the full learning services team that put this together!

Thank you @KCTesterman and @jsailor  - for the benefit of other users reading this, just wanted to let you know that I reached out to my CSM and he took care of it immediately. And FYI, we are NOT signed up for any of the paid tiers, so it looks like the ability to be a Portal Admin does not require that. THANK YOU!

@mcmacdonald Yes, every institution can have a Portal Admin regardless of subscription level. If you're interested in seeing other options in some of the paid tiers, check out the amazing options of other courses on this document. My team does an amazing job building content that is applicable to all learners - new and old. They even update the content to reflect new releases. It's a win-win! If you have other questions, please let me know and I'm happy to answer them.
