Canvas cannot track whether your students are actively working on assignments, only can see if they submitted it. Sorry 😢

It will only show if there are student submissions. Did any students turn their assignments in?   If that doesn't work, you either didn't grade the submissions.

This isn't always the case. To avoid file issues, Canvas will randomize how documents are downloaded and what they turn into. Either way, the document can still be opened.

I also had this problem when I was new to Canvas. To solve this problem, don't put assignment links directly. Get an app first, enter the right Consumer Key, and voila! The error is solved.
