As we continue to innovate within Canvas, delivering features that truly enhance the learning experience is our top priority. Today, we want to provide an update on the release timeline for Checkpoints, a new feature within Canvas Discussions. Originally slated for an earlier release, we have decided to shift the full launch of Checkpoints to Q4, with the beta version available in October and the production release scheduled for November.

Why the Change?

Our decision to move the release timeline stems from a commitment to delivering the best possible experience for our users. Checkpoints is designed to bring greater clarity and flexibility to discussions by allowing two distinct due dates and point values within a single graded discussion. This simplifies the instructor experience while ensuring students have a clear understanding of their expectations.

However, as we've worked closely with early testers and gathered feedback, it has become clear that there are a few key areas we want to refine before Checkpoints is widely available. These include:

  • Addressing Bugs: Ensuring that any technical issues are resolved so that the feature functions smoothly across different environments.
  • Improving Accessibility: Making sure Checkpoints is accessible to all users, aligning with our ongoing commitment to inclusivity.
  • Refining Workflows: Polishing the user experience to avoid any confusion or awkward interactions, ensuring that Checkpoints feels intuitive and easy to use from day one.

Early Access for Feedback

To help us achieve these goals, we're working with a select group of institutions in both higher education and K-12. These early adopters will have the opportunity to use Checkpoints and provide us with detailed feedback. Their insights will be instrumental in helping us address any remaining issues and make final adjustments before the full release.

Looking Ahead

While there will always be room for future enhancements, our goal with this adjusted timeline is to ensure that the initial launch of Checkpoints is as polished as possible. By taking the extra time now, we aim to minimize disruptions and ensure a smoother rollout for all our users.

We appreciate your understanding and patience as we work to deliver a feature that truly meets your needs. Stay tuned for more updates as we approach the Q4 release, and thank you for your continued support in helping us make Canvas better for everyone.

Thank you for this update! When can we expect to see a video of what the experience(s) will be?  Will that be in October or between now and October?
