I am familiar with Classic Quizzes and have only transitioned one class to New Quizzes and so far, I hate it. I use Item Banks and have Canvas select random questions from the bank for each student's quiz. Most Item Banks have about twice the number of questions as are on the quiz. However, students are reporting getting the same question 2-3x on a quiz. Is there a way to stop this?
Hi @KatyMeltSimp,
After selecting the Item Bank you want to link to a question and clicking the All/Random button, are you then editing the question to select how many questions to pull from the bank? These are the instructions I share with faculty. See if they work for you.
1. Click the All/Random button (do not click on specific questions unless you only want to add those questions), then close the item bank tab selector by clicking the X in the top left corner of the tab.
2. Return to the quiz, click to Edit the new question, then under the Question selection options, choose whether to Use all questions or Randomly select questions (eg, randomly select 1 out of 3 possible questions). Enter the points per question, and click Done.
I am unsure you understand the issue. I have had this, and many teachers have had this. Essentially, an Item Bank with a Random pull should only pull a single question, let's call this Question A, one time. But it has happened to me and others where Question A is pulled twice in a set. This is not because there are 2 Question A's or two questions with the exact same wording/answers, it is that the random seems so random it could pull in Question A 2 times. It is not, once selected, removing Question A from the random pull.
