Hi!
We have recently changed from Moodle to Canvas and I am trying to import question banks from Moodle Quizzes into Canvas New Quiz. Our Canvas setup only has New Quizzes, no option for classic Quizzes.
We must have a version of Moodle newer than 2.x, as I don't have the option to export quizzes to QTI package. So the only way I've found to import from Moodle is to backup my whole Moodle course, then selectively import the Moodle backup file choosing the Moodle 1.9/2.x option (even though I don't think we have one of those versions). But when I selectively import the question banks, they go into the Canvas Question Bank not an Item bank, and I can't access them in a new Quiz.
The only documentation I've found about utilizing Question Banks in New Quizzes, is that I have to put the Questions in a classic Quiz and then there is supposed to be a way to convert classic Quiz to a New Quiz. However, I don't have Classic Quiz option so I can't do that.
So what can I do, to either import Moodle quiz question banks into Item Banks, or to make Question Bank available to New Quiz (other than manually copy and pasting every question)?
Can't believe this is so hard... 😞
Well, I kept trying and may have found a workaround. I did the following:
I don't yet know how I can easily get those New Quiz questions into an Item Bank. The only option I've found is to do it one by one using the Edit question option. Would be good if there was a quick way to copy all questions in a New Quiz into an Item Bank.
Further to above, I just tried again, and when I backed up I used default Moodle format (not IMS Common Cartridge 1.1), and imported using option Moodle 1.9/2.x. I also imported into a new Question Bank. This imported the Moodle Question Bank into a Canvas classic Question Bank, but didn't seem to import images.
Hi Craig,
I'm a little late on this thread but wanted to add notes for anyone following along afterwards still working their way from Moodle to Canvas.
We have found the same workflow as you that functions to move quizzes and questions (if they are of the compatible types) across, namely a course-level moodle .mbz backup imported using the Import Course Content >> Moodle 1.9/2.x workflow will produce canvas classic quizzes and classic quiz question banks. We also found that if you import the entire course, the quiz question images appear but if you choose 'Select content' and then specified specific quizzes, the images did not appear.
These classic quizzes could then be migrated from into new quizzes. To create new quiz item banks, we found a pretty convoluted process: create a new classic quiz containing all the questions you want to be in a new quiz item bank, exporting that quiz, importing that manually into a newly created item. (This process is documented here: https://support.eclass.ualberta.ca/Knowledgebase/Article/View/591/55/creating-new-quiz-item-banks-fr....)
Subsequently we have found an issue relating to question versions that we have added as a feature request for repair by Canvas that anyone making the transition from moodle to canvas should be aware of when bringing over quizzes.
Hope this helps!
Dave
Hi there, Canvas friends! In my institution we have been also struggling with Moodle questions that do not migrate to Canvas New Quizzes neither Classic Quizzes.
Is there a post or a Canvas guide where I can find the equivalence between Moodle and Canvas questions?
We currently know there are some that do not migrate, however we would love some back up info so we are 100% sure there is no possible migration for those questions.
Cheers!
Lucía
