no matter what i try changing file type or course image etc, I cannot get an image to show on the students ipads when taking a quiz on canvas. I have had them go through both the app and the browser. When I create the question in quizzes and add the file is always comes back with the same message You are attempting to save content containing course links which may not work when used in other courses". But i have tried different file types and it comes back with the same message every time.
@Diddy - This sounds like it's related to a known issue with images (and other media files) in New Quizzes. There are a number of posts/questions about this throughout the community but I'd recommend looking at the Course Files in Item Banks Known Issue Update section of the New Quizzes End of Quarter Update for Q1 2024. I also highly recommend reviewing the comments on that blog post, especially from leward and Indiana University's documentation (it's long but the most thorough explanation I've seen and offers some workarounds): About the Bug in New Quizzes Item Banks. This Pictures in New Quizzes Not Showing Up discussion also contains some comments related to this issue.
Unfortunately, there's no quick fix for this but it seems to come down to where the images are stored. It may be best to first upload the image/file to your User Files, ensure it's set to be visible and publicly available, and then embed it in your new quiz.
This is definitely a frustrating issue and I hope there's a better solution offered by Instructure soon. My institution is still mostly on Classic Quiz and I can't imagine if this issue was happening across the entire university.
Beware of making files public- We were recently made aware of an issue (not a bug, according to Instructure), that once a file is made public, a verifier link is created so that file can be viewed by bypassing any authentication system. That link is permanent- if anyone gets a hold of that link, they can view the file even after it's visibility is changed within Canvas. The only way to "break" it is to reset it via the API.
Ah, that's really good to know!! Thank you!
