Grade Post Policy not available for new quiz

The teacher can leave that "Restrict student result view - show points" box unchecked in the quiz settings, but before that, there is a check box to show points awarded.  This is both overall and per question.  So, in theory, the student could deduce they got a question wrong by not seeing any points for it, correct?  If we disable that first checkbox, we also disable showing the total score, which is not necessarily desirable.

So, then you might HIDE the grades from students in the Grade Post Policy, but....

“In New Quizzes, enabling a posting policy will not affect a student’s ability to access their quiz scores. Student visibility of New Quizzes scores must be managed from the quiz settings menu.”

Will the NEW Quiz allow the Grade Post Policy to work in the future?

I have a teacher that reported a student came forward to let them know based on the analytics available once they left the testing room (they're allowed to leave when finished) they could tell what each student leaving the room received on the test.  Knowing that she received a 90 and the graph changed from 80-90 and then after the next student left 65-90 knew that one student received an 80 and the other a 65 - basically a FERPA violation. 

The teacher states after restricting the student view it still allowed them to continue to see the grade distribution in their view (possibly because it was changed after the test started?).  To completely remove their view they had to additionally "Hide grade distribution graphs from students" under course Settings, unfortunately this setting is at the course level not the assessment level, so they couldn't turn it back on after everyone finished, unless they're toggling it back off before the start of a new assessment and toggling it back on after the test is over.   I need to additionally test this - but any ideas on allowing students to see analytics only after everyone has completed a quiz without shutting it off at the course level?

Thank you for posting this in the Canvas Community! 

I had some time to play around with this in my Sandbox environment and I wanted to share my findings with you. 

1. I setup a New Quiz in my course. (three multiple choice questions worth 5 points each)
2. I enabled the option for Restrict student result view and left the different sub-options un-checked for: 

• Show points awarded (overall and per question)
• Show points possible (overall and per question)
• Show items and questions. 

From there I went to the gradebook and placed the quiz into a manual policy. I did this before students had a chance to use their attempt on the quiz. Once the policy was enabled, I took the quiz as a student in the course. 

After answering the three questions and submitting the quiz, what I saw is that the student is presented with a Success message. The message they see is: Success! Your submission was Successful. and below that it lists "Results are not displayed Per Instructor settings." 

I also checked the grades page as the student after and the quiz displays the hidden icon and says "The Instructor has not posted this grade." 

I also have the course setting option Unchecked for "Hide grade distribution graphs from students." 

What I have concluded from this is: The Manual grade posting policy will hide the grade that the students received on the quiz from the grades page.

Since I have the restrict student results setting enabled, They are also not able to review the questions that they answered on the quiz. 

The grade posting policy will hide the grade from the Grades page for the students. (Manual Policy)

The Restrict Student Results hides the Points Awarded, Points Possible Per Question and of course The Items and Questions.

Thank you for your efforts and confirmation of what we experienced.  

Since the student determined the grades by knowing their score and deducing their classmate's grade from the distribution graph, the instructor was pointing out that if you allow a student to see a grade it's also being added immediately to the grade distribution graph (available to all students) and can reveal their score or a classmate's score.  I think to their point Restrict student result view should be inclusive or auto disable Hide grade distribution graphs from student view.  They can't or shouldn't be exclusive settings.  something an instructor might miss.  

In your tests when you set the manual posting option did you confirm nothing was updating on the grade distribution graph?  They found that it did with both Restrict student result view and Hide grade distribution graphs from student view disabled in the quiz.  Based on their experience Hide grade distribution graphs had to be additionally turned off under Course Settings otherwise the grade distribution graph updated and as students left the classroom they could calculate classmate scores (small graduate student course.)  

Only after turning it off in the quiz settings AND course settings the graph stopped updating.  However, they didn't make that change until after the student reported the grades of other students could be revealed and the quiz was already underway. 

They were hoping to leave the setting enabled under Course Settings so the distribution of released quizzes would appear on the distribution graph.   I'll test this but I'm assuming the manual posting may prevent the updates to the distribution graph when used.

I did some testing of my own on this matter.

With students being allowed to view the grade distribution graphs but with restrict student results turned on, the students are not able to see the distribution graph (or their grade at the time). Additionally when students are allowed to see the distribution graph but the assignment is using a manual grade posting policy (and view results is not restricted) the students cannot see the distribution graph until their grade is released.
