SQL against backend data?

Rather than spending time on generating specific queries against the data, since the data is obviously already there on the back end for the currently available analytics, what might be the problem with running SQL against the data in order to make it available on [course], [student], [activity], [date], etc., with results viewable within Canvas tables or downloadable in *.csv or other delimited format? This is and has been widely available in Blackboard, Moodle, et al. LMS's, and the inability to generate relevant reports, including all date for the course, is sorely missed in Canvas.
