Parent View of Mastery Connect

Parents/guardians can easily access their student’s assessments through Mastery Connect or the Canvas + Mastery Connect integration, once the teacher has made the assessment available to them.

Mastery Connect Users

  • Parents/guardians can go to masteryconnect.com or use the school/district single-sign on portal to access Mastery Connect.
  • The home page will display a stream of assessments from all of the student’s current courses.
  • Any assessment a student has not started or not completed will be noted as Start Assessment.
  • Clicking Start Assessment will take the student directly to the assessment.
  • Across the top, parents/guardians will see a few other options to toggle between Current Classes, Archived Classes, and Progress Reports.
  • The Current Classes tab will open by default. Here parents/guardians will see an overview of the percentage of standards assessed in each class. For more detailed information in a class, parents/guardians can click on a specific class title.
  • Archived Classes will allow parents/guardians to see data from past classes.
  • If your school uses standards-based progress reports in Mastery Connect, parents/guardians can download and view a report by clicking the Progress Reports tab. Alternatively, they can download the report by clicking the term name link. Then to view the progress report, click the Download Progress Report button. Note: It must be downloaded as a PDF to view it.

Canvas + Mastery Connect Users

  • Parents/guardians can be set up as an observer to their student’s Canvas courses or can also have their student login to their Canvas account.
  • When using the Canvas + Mastery Connect integration, each Canvas course has its own mastery tracker.
  • After opening a Canvas course, parents/guardians can select Mastery Tracker from the course navigation bar.
  • This will open the individual student report for that specific course.
  • To find the individual report for another course, parents/guardians will need to return to the Dashboard and click on that course title.

Features in the Parent View

Parents/guardians can view their student’s progress towards mastery in each of their courses. This is a great way to keep parents/guardians informed, as well as supporting student involvement in their own learning.

Mastery Connect Users

  • Select the Classes tab.
  • Click a class from the list of trackers.
  • From the sub navigation bar click Progress.
  • This will display student’s progress towards mastery on each standard in the course.
  • On the right-hand side parents/guardians will see what percentage of the standards assessed their student has mastered, as well as be able to view reports.
  • Parents/guardians can expand each standard to preview their student’s progress across several assessments.
  • Select an assessment, and if the teacher has enabled the parent/guardian to see the assessment, they can toggle between the Assessment, Student Answers, and Item Analysis tabs.

Canvas + Mastery Connect Users

  • Select Mastery Tracker from within a Canvas course’s navigation bar.
  • This will display the student’s progress towards mastery on each standard in the course.
  • On the right-hand side the parent/guardians will see the percentage of the standards assessed their student has mastered, as well as be able to view reports.
  • Parents/guardians can expand each standard to preview their student’s progress across several assessments.
  • Select an assessment, and if the teacher has enabled the parent/guardian to see the assessment, they can toggle between the Assessment, Student Answers, and Item Analysis tabs.

Parent Access to Assessments

Teachers control what pieces of assessments the parents/guardians have access to. They also control when parents/guardians gain access. Mastery Connect users and Canvas + Mastery Connect users adjust the settings the same way. However, Canvas + Mastery Connect users can also change this setting in a secondary way, described below.

All Users: Changing Privacy Settings from the Mastery Tracker

  • From the main tracker screen locate the assignment you would like to change the access to.
  • Hover over the name and select View from the drop down menu.
  • Select the Privacy tab.
  • The teacher can choose to adjust access to the Assessment, Answer Key, Item Analysis, and Student Answers here.
  • Click Save.

Canvas + Mastery Connect Users: Changing Privacy Settings from the Assignment

  • Select Assignments from the Canvas course navigation bar.
  • Click the assignment you wish to change the privacy settings for.
  • Select the Privacy tab.
  • The teacher can choose to adjust access to the Assessment, Answer Key, Item Analysis, and Student Answers here.
  • Click Save.

PRO TIP:

-When initially creating trackers each year or semester, send activation emails to parents/guardians to set up their accounts.

-After completing an assessment, give your students access to the assessment and their answers. This will allow parents/guardians to also see them.

-Challenge parents/guardians and students to regularly check their Mastery Tracker and look for improvement and growth in the standards.

FINAL THOUGHTS

To truly leverage the full capability of Mastery Connect, we must involve parents/guardians in the data process. Within Mastery Connect, parents/guardians have access to monitor their students’ progress towards mastery. Providing parents/guardians the opportunity to see their student’s growth generates a relationship between parents/guardians, students, and teachers all working towards student mastery and student agency.
